Hull edge Middlesbrough late to reach Premier League in play-off final
With so much at stake and considering the astonishing off-field drama heading into this game, it was perhaps no surprise that the opening stages of the match were an extremely cautious affair. Attacking threats were very hard to come by for both sides, and Aidan Morris’s 20-yard effort, which was steered a long way off target, summed up the opening quarter of an hour.
Bologna brush off Napoli comeback with dramatic late winner in five-goal thriller
The home crowd were in fine voice at the start of the contest, but were stunned into silence with just 10 minutes on the clock. After receiving a pass inside the box from Juan Miranda, Federico Bernardeschi produced a rocket of an effort that found the top corner to give the visitors the lead and secure his third Serie A goal of the season. Antonio Conte’s side almost found themselves in an even worse position just two minutes later, when a shot from Miranda struck the woodwork.
Luque and Cubo score debut goals as Atletico Madrid leave it late in victory over Valencia
After a very quiet opening to the match, the visitors suddenly created a golden opportunity from out of nowhere on the quarter-hour mark. A beautiful back-heeled pass from Nahuel Molina set Rodrigo Mendoza up brilliantly, but he was denied by a superb block from Stole Dimitrievski. Just moments later, the Rojiblancos came even closer to taking the lead, when Molina’s outrageous long-range effort crashed off the woodwork to Valencia’s relief.
Fernandez heads Chelsea past Leeds and into FA Cup final against Man City
This was the Blues’ first outing since they sacked manager Liam Rosenior on Wednesday following a run of seven defeats in eight matches (W1), with interim head coach Calum McFarlane tasked with finding an improvement against a Leeds side unbeaten in their previous seven games (W4, D3).
Late Toulouse leveller sees Monaco miss chance to move into Ligue 1's top six
Les Rouge et Blanc were clearly fired up for this game, as they made a blistering start and put the hosts’ defence under immediate pressure. After only five minutes played, Maghnes Akliouche fired a shot on target that was superbly tipped over the bar by Guillaume Restes, before the visitors made the breakthrough on their very next attack, as Jordan Teze headed home a superb delivery from Simon Adingra to net his first Ligue 1 goal of the season.
Fiorentina draw with Lecce and miss huge chance to all but secure Serie A survival
The opening 20 minutes of the first half were a quiet affair, with the only noteworthy moment coming from Walid Cheddira, whose header from a corner was calmly cleared away by Nicolo Fagioli on the goal line. While clear-cut chances were largely absent, the Salentini at least showed more urgency in the final third than their opponents, with every single point absolutely vital for the hosts at this stage of the season.
Title-chasing Inter go 12 points clear at Serie A summit after thrashing Cagliari
The hosts were left scratching their heads as to how they hadn’t made the breakthrough inside the opening 20 minutes. A counter-attack from Inter saw Marcus Thuram and Francesco Pio Esposito link up well, leading to a pass across the face of goal that found Federico Dimarco, but his close-range effort was heroically blocked in front of the goal line by Michel Adopo.
Victor Gyokeres stars as Sweden cruise past Ukraine and into play-off final
Despite being without a competitive win since November 2024, Sweden began confidently and stunned their opponents by taking the lead after only six minutes. A smart pass across the face of goal from Benjamin Nygren found Viktor Gyokeres in a perfect position inside the six-yard box, and the Arsenal striker made no mistake to net his 16th goal for his country - his first since November 2024 - giving Blagult a dream start.
AC Milan back in title fight after key win over Torino
It was the visitors who certainly started the brightest with a flurry of efforts in the opening quarter hour, including a header from Ardian Ismajli inside the box that was expertly tipped over the bar by Milan captain Mike Maignan. However, after a sluggish start to the contest, the hosts suddenly woke up with the interval looming. After 36 minutes, a rapid strike from Adrien Rabiot forced Alberto Paleari into action for the first time.
RHODES: Managerialism or Self Government?
The existential yearnings emerging inside the hearts and minds of people throughout the world—yearnings that no doubt have existed since time began, though not always consciously realized—are stirring like the struggle of a chrysalis. They are the desire to be heard, to be felt, to be recognized, and, above all, to be free from harm and to live together with others in a protected space where government operates as a negative force.
Simeone and Zapata on target as Torino beat Lazio to give D’Aversa winning start
After a very cagey opening 20 minutes of the match, it was the hosts that made the vital breakthrough as Giovanni Simeone’s prodded effort from close range narrowly went over the line before Oliver Provstgaard could clear the ball away. With momentum behind them, the Maroons almost doubled their advantage just a few minutes later through the inspired Simeone, but his fierce shot was palmed away by Ivan Provedel to Lazio’s relief.
Conceicao and Openda guide Juventus to slim win over Roma
The first half was a largely tepid affair, which saw little quality in the final third from both teams. Juventus captain Manuel Locatelli and Roma forward Paulo Dybala both managed a shot on target in the early stages of the match, but neither attempt troubled the goalkeeper in any way. Khephren Thuram was able to fire a speculative attempt on target from long-range for the hosts, but it merely produced a bread-and-butter save for Mile Svilar around the half-hour mark.
RHODES: The Cult of Santa Claus Part 2
When I was a child, I loved horror movies about vampires and werewolves. Later, growing up in the 80’s, I watched my share of generic slasher films, but those never appealed to me. My curiosity was always for the stories that blurred the line between the metaphysical world I was raised with in my Catholic faith and the real world that I lived in every day. Even when I was young, I knew both worlds were governed by rules.
RHODES: The Cult of Santa Claus (Part1)
The idea of the “cult of Santa Claus” has been on my mind for a long time, long before I ever tried to articulate it publicly. It began years ago during a conversation with one of my state legislators. He had become fixated on sending out surveys and polls to his constituents, asking what their concerns were and what they “needed.” At first glance that seems harmless — even admirable — but something about it bothered me.
Napoli rocked as Bologna pair Lucumi and Dallinga score in shock triumph
After a scrappy start to the match, the first clear-cut opportunity arrived at the midway point of the first half when Bologna defender Jhon Lucumi steered a close-range header wide of the post following an excellent corner-kick delivery.
The Rule of Law on Trial:
What Happens If Trump Just... Doesn’t Listen? There’s an unwritten rule in democratic societies: court orders aren’t optional. They’re not restaurant menus. You don’t get to look them over and go, “Hmm, I’ll take the ruling on page three but skip the injunction, thanks.” But lately, that rule’s been looking a little shaky.
VR: A Game Changer… or Just a Cool Toy With a Helmet?
You strap on the headset. You grip the controllers. You smack your coffee table. Welcome to Virtual Reality, where the possibilities are endless and so are the bruises. VR exploded into our lives promising the future: immersive gaming, new ways to work out, socialize, even travel the world from your living room. It sounded like the next big leap in tech. But now that the goggles have been on for a while... was it really the game changer we hoped for? Let’s take a peek through the virtual lens.
F for Education:
Is the System Setting Students Up to Fail? The printer is jamming. The Wi-Fi’s down again. A teenager just asked what a floppy disk is. Ah yes, education is alive and well. Except… is it? For over a century, we’ve been putting kids in classrooms, handing them pens, and teaching them how to find “x” as if it’s ever really going to matter at a checkout in Aldi. Education has been mandatory since the 1800s, and while the world outside has done a full upgrade to Version 5.0, our classrooms?
Arbitration And Trust Disputes: A Bermuda Perspective
Resolving disputes by arbitration is a widely utilised alternative to court proceedings, offering the parties to a dispute the benefit of privacy and flexibility. Notwithstanding that, this method of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) does not lend itself neatly to resolving trust disputes for two main reasons. First, arbitration derives its jurisdiction from an agreement of the parties to the dispute to arbitrate.

ICC Seeks Kenyan Arrest for Witness Bribery
The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued an arrest warrant against a Kenyan journalist for bribing or attempting to influence prosecution witnesses in the ongoing case against the country’s deputy president. Prosecutors in The Hague have charged Walter Osapiri Barasa, 41, from Eldoret in the Rift Valley for “corruptly influencing” the testimony of three protected witnesses in the case against Deputy President William Ruto and former journalist Joshua Arap Sang.
Sporting heroes who died in World War I
The largest collective acts of commemoration this remembrance weekend will take place at sporting events. The Millennium Stadium at Cardiff Arms Park, Murrayfield and Twickenham will fall silent ahead of the rugby internationals, and more than half a million supporters will pay their respects at club grounds, large and small, around Britain, with red poppies embroidered into football shirts in the English and Scottish premier leagues, writes Matthew Rhodes.
Two Nevada City entrants among top three chosen for Tahoe National Forest photo contest
The Tahoe National Forest announced the winners of the 2016 Tahoe National Forest Photo Contest. First place is “Sunset Over the Little Truckee River,” by Matthew Rhodes of Citrus Heights. Second place is “High Mountain Meadow,” by Nevada City’s Monica Haulman, and third place is “Weathered Beauty,” by Kian Berreman, also of Nevada City. Judges indicated that with so many high quality entries, it was hard to pick the best.
Liam Fox: immigration is not a bad thing - uncontrolled immigration is
“Immigration is not a bad thing,” said Liam Fox MP today at the Conservative Party Conference in Birmingham, “but uncontrolled immigration is.” That, writes Matthew Rhodes, is an important message for Conservatives to get across. The key, according to the former Defence Secretary, as he released new ICM polling for British Future on public attitudes to immigration, is keeping the immigration that is good for Britain.

‘Our Iftar is more than a friendly gathering – it is a powerful act of unity,” said Defence Minister Lord Earl Howe, addressing the mixed audience, Muslim and non-Muslim, military and civilian, gathered at a special Armed Forces Iftar last night to remember the service of Muslim soldiers in the armed forces stretching back over 100 years to the Somme. It was, writes Steve Ballinger, my first Iftar.

Today, writes Steve Ballinger, people will gather from Trafalgar Square in London to Batley & Spen in Yorkshire and from New York to Melbourne to Nairobi, to celebrate the life of Jo Cox MP, to mourn her death and to show that together we have #MoreInCommon. Her death has devastated a family and attacked the ideals that we as a nation most cherish. She was killed by someone seeking to divide us. But today’s gatherings – on what would have been Jo’s 42nd birthday – show that we will not be divided.

“Now I can say what I want to say; I’m not frightened to make mistakes and even when I do make mistakes, people are very helpful with us. They help me to say what I want.” Ban a refugee from Iraq is one of those who has spoken to Refugee Action on how important language skills are for refugees as they seek to integrate and to make their contribution to British society.
British Future
Everyone in England should be able to come together to celebrate our shared identity. People worry about Englishness being divisive but we believe that everyone in England, whatever their faith or ethnic background, can join the party and show their pride in the country where we live. Big sports events are one of the few opportunities that we have to do that.

Sadiq Khan today becomes Britain’s first ethnic minority, first Asian and first Muslim to be directly elected to such a significant role, writes Sunder Katwala. A new Leicester project is bringing together members of the Hindu, Muslim and Sikh communities to learn and celebrate their shared history of contribution to Britain in the First World War. Around one and a half million Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims fought side by side for Britain in the ‘Great War’ of 1914-18 – including at the Battle of the Somme, the centenary of which Britain will mark on 1 July this year.

Women voters have the power to decide the EU referendum, write Deborah Mattinson and Sunder Katwala – if they choose to take it. Both referendum campaigns will need to persuade women voters if they want to win. That’s partly due to the simple demographic fact that there are one million more women than men in Britain, mainly because of the gender gap in life expectancy; but it is also reflects the fact that women are considerably more likely to be undecided about Europe.
British Future
Donald Trump’s call for a blanket ban on Muslims visiting America represents a real low in electoral politics, writes Sunder Katwala. It is hugely irresponsible for a prominent figure like Trump to fan the flames of prejudice in this way and raises questions over whether the UK should consider barring Trump from the UK on hate speech grounds. The proposals are ludicrous and unconstitutional, and will be rejected by America’s decent majority, among them many proud Muslim Americans.

British Future will be hosting a two-part event at the Bristol Festival of Ideas on Thursday 19th November. Immigration was a key issue in the election and will continue to be a source of debate and contention. Is this a problem for cities? Cities are traditionally places for immigrants. Migrants help renew a place, bringing new ideas, skills and work.

Posted on 30 October 2015 As America experiences a demographic transformation, the rising new American electorate poses an existential challenge to the future of the Republican Party, write Frank Sharry and Sunder Katwala. The so-called Obama Coalition – comprised of African Americans, Latinos, Asian-Americans, educated whites, unmarried women and young voters – is growing. The Republican electorate – increasingly white, elderly, exurban and downscale – is shrinking.

100 years ago today, the first of many Belgian refugees fleeing the German invasion began to arrive in Britain. It was to become the largest ever single refugee flow from one country to the UK, with over 250,000 Belgian refugees, many of them children, arriving on our shores, writes Joe Cryer. The BBC is marking this day with the launch of a new guide that tells the touching story of the Belgian refugees, and of the British people who welcomed them to their country and their homes.

That is a nightmare scenario that keeps pro-EU campaign strategists awake at night. With net migration at record levels, the government’s promise to reduce it in tatters, and Europe struggling to cope with a refugee crisis, it is a difficult time to be making the case for the free movement of people across a continent. By contrast, for Nigel Farage, to have a referendum to leave the EU at such a moment could be the stuff that Eurosceptic political dreams are made of.

Ajmal came to the UK when he was just 14 as a refugee, fleeing Afghanistan in fear for his life.

Today’s speech from David Cameron, focusing on illegal immigration, might help reassure some members of the public who are worried that our immigration system isn’t working and isn’t properly enforced, writes Steve Ballinger. British Future’s Sunder Katwala will be offering comment on the general election through the night in ITV’s ‘Opinion Room’. Britain’s electoral map is changing in this too-close-to-call election, writes Sunder Katwala. Our fragmenting party system and shifting electoral geography has made the 2015 General Election a battle on many different electoral fronts. One thing that has been less noticed is that the geographic frontlines of the battle between the two major parties has also shifted considerably too from a generation ago.

A new project announced today seeks to raise public awareness during the First World War Centenary of the 400,000 Muslims from undivided India who served in the British Army in The First World War. The 2015 election will produce a record number of ethnic minority MPs, writes Steve Ballinger, rising to over 40 from the 27 elected in 2010 and potentially trebling in a decade from the 15 elected in 2005. Despite the 2015 election being the most unpredictable in recent history, it looks certain that more ethnic minority MPs than ever before will sit in the next parliament.

It’s the last day of the season and the final scores are in on the net migration target – as the last set of ONS immigration stats are released before the election. It would be hard to pretend that the crowd is on tenterhooks, argues Sunder Katwala. It would be hard to imagine a bigger boost to the Prime Minister’s bid for re-election were the figures to miraculously fall below the 100,000 level that he promised voters last time around.
