In my last few columns, we've explored what artificial intelligence is, where you're already using it, and some of the ways people are using it for good. This week, we'll tackle a topic that might surprise you: AI companionship. Do you remember Wilson from the movie Cast Away? Wilson was just a volleyball, yet audiences around the world felt genuine sadness when he floated away. Neither the audience nor Tom Hanks' character believed Wilson was alive.

If you garden, you have likely encountered aphids on trees, shrubs or other garden plants in your landscape. Identifiable by their small teardrop-shaped bodies with cornicles, the two tail pipe-like structures that protrude from their back end. They come in a variety of colors, with or without wings, and some like the cabbage and wooly aphids are covered with a gray or white waxy substance.

As we near the highly anticipated 2026 Nevada County Fair, the deadline for filing entries for still exhibits, including artwork, crafts, photography, and baked goods, is fast approaching.

Maria Jhai, a student and member of the debate team in the class of 1992 at Nevada Union High School (NU) in Grass Valley, was appointed to serve as a judge on the Los Angeles Superior Court by Governor Gavin Newsom in May of 2025. Jhai won re-election outright in the primary on June 2, 2026.

Wednesday’s Western Nevada County Slo-Pitch Coed C League game at Memorial Park put the community in community sports as No. 3-ranked Sunshine Daydream faced off against No. 2-ranked Jim Meadows Construction. The mood was more that of a family reunion as both teams opted to share one dugout through the entirety of the game, with family, friends and the teams spurring each other on while sharing no shortage of one-liners and friendly barbs.
