Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
None
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes - but only during a work experience placement at a magistrates court...
How is social media changing news?
It democratises what becomes "news" but perhaps at the expense of accuracy and considered reporting.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
John Krajewski - the original House of Cards
What does it mean to be a journalist?
In the 21st century world it's hard to say. To write truthfully and to write with integrity.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
I rarely follow twitter directly.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Any way, shape or form.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Fairly simple; laptop, internet connection, LibreOffice
What's your favorite social network?
I only really use Twitter and Facebook but neither with any great skill.
Who do you wish followed you?
Anyone who enjoys reading my work.
Why did you become a journalist?
I spent years posting in forums and leaving comments on stories about boxing. I thought perhaps I should start to do it more formally
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
I didn't; no high school newspaper and I found the university newspapers to be incredibly cliquey and self-absorbed.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
I rather enjoyed writing my piece on a bout between Frans Botha and Sonny Bill Williams.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
As someone who is still an aspiring journalist myself, it's hard to offer advice. Keep trying and make things happen I guess...
