DTN Livestock Close: Hog Futures Experience Heavy Selloff
Photo: Soybean Checkoff Outside markets were enthusiastic about exports and economic recovery Tuesday, but the livestock markets focused more on disappointment. ©Debra L Ferguson Stock Photography Livestock futures prices are largely mixed through the first portion of Friday’s trade, with a disappointing export sales report and another day of big gains in feed prices adding a bearish tone to the livestock board. DTN Livestock Midday: Patience is Key
Cattle feeding. Photo: ©Debra L Ferguson It’s looking like Wednesday’s trade could be one that ends up supporting the live cattle, cash cattle, feeder cattle and lean hog markets as higher prices are being seen across the board. DTN Livestock Closing: Cattle, Hogs in Broad Market Gains
Cattle feeding. Photo: ©Debra L Ferguson Market exuberance after the three-day weekend led to large trading volumes for many markets, including the livestock futures, which spent most of the session posting gains and, in some cases, hitting fresh contract highs. GENERAL COMMENTS: Feeder cattle futures led the gains in the livestock market Monday, trying to make up for last week’s lost ground and struggling to keep up with the fed cattle market’s continual trend of day-by-day fresh contract highs.
DTN Livestock Midday: Feeder Cattle Market Revs Up Its Engine
Cattle feeding. Photo: ©Debra L Ferguson Livestock futures are higher across the board Monday at midday. GENERAL COMMENTS: Perhaps in an effort to catch up with the hog and live cattle markets, which continue to explore fresh contract highs day by day, on Monday the feeder cattle market is leading the futures gains on the livestock board with prices up more than $3 per hundredweight (cwt).
DTN Livestock Closing: Export Bullishness Boosts Hog Prices
Cattle feeding. Photo: ©Debra L Ferguson The consistently higher trend in pork and lean hog prices continued unabated through the end of this trading week. Cattle futures prices had more of a wobble alongside volatility in the feed grains markets. Though futures trading is done for the week, cash cattle trade may still be headed for a Friday showdown.
DTN Livestock Midday: Hogs & Cattle Play with Contract Highs
Cattle feeding. Photo: ©Debra L Ferguson Both cattle and lean hog futures are testing new contract highs Thursday. GENERAL COMMENTS: On Thursday, feeder cattle are recovering from their Wednesday stumble, when they were pushed lower by a huge surge in feed prices. Higher prices across the board for most livestock contracts in the middle of Thursday’s trading session mean lean hog futures are exploring fresh contract highs, again.
DTN Livestock Closing: Neutral Weekly Chart Movement
Photo: Blair Fannin, Texas AgriLife Extension Feeder Cattle Futures Balk at Lofty Grain Prices The steepest losses in the livestock sector Friday were noted in feeder cattle futures, down $0.60 to $0.875 at the close of the session, but the weekly chart movement was more neutral for live cattle and lean hogs.

Photo: Texas AgriLife Extension Livestock Prices Wobble at Midday Movements in outside markets continue to spark active trade in the livestock futures through the first half of Friday’s trading session, although the direction of trade has generally pointed downward. Feeder cattle future contracts are leading the bearish movement in the sector, with losses of $0.40 to $0.60.
DTN Livestock Closing: Live Cattle Higher With Eye Toward Cattle on Feed Report
Photo: Kansas State University An upward recovery in lean hog futures took place Friday, and although it didn’t contribute enough enthusiasm through the livestock sector to pull feeder cattle prices out of their lower trend, nevertheless most live cattle futures contracts looked bullishly toward a 2021 outlook now sketched out by USDA’s Nov. 1 Cattle On Feed report.
DTN Livestock Midday: Hogs Higher & Cattle Lower
Photo: Kansas State University Lean hog futures are higher Friday, while cattle contracts are lower. GENERAL COMMENTS: Lean hog futures have recovered somewhat from Thursday’s accelerated drop, but live cattle and feeder cattle futures are continuing their losses despite relatively firm indications from cash business in the country. Trade volume may pick up and shift the tone for live cattle futures as the Friday afternoon Cattle on Feed report approaches.
DTN Livestock Closing: Losses Across Entire Livestock Sector Thursday
Photo: Kansas State University Lean hog futures led the livestock sector lower Thursday with losses of more than $3 per cwt at various points during the session. GENERAL COMMENTS: Disappointing pork export sales to China may have been the motivator behind some of the selling pressure that exacerbated the downward trend in lean hog futures Thursday.
DTN Livestock Midday: Break in Hog Contracts Drag Cattle Lower
Photo: Kansas State University Lower trade in lean hog futures pulled the cattle contracts lower Thursday. GENERAL COMMENTS: Selling interest in nearby lean hog futures encountered pockets of low liquidity Thursday morning, triggering sudden losses that have extended through the middle of the session. This bearishness has spilled over into live cattle and feeder cattle futures, which are all lower across the board.
DTN Livestock Midday: Lower Tone for Wednesday
Photo: Kansas State University Live cattle, feeder cattle and lean hog futures are all lower at midday Wednesday. GENERAL COMMENTS: An absence of much volume Wednesday — especially an absence of willing buyers — has allowed livestock contracts to chop lower through the early part of the trading session, giving back much of the gains made previously in the week. Live cattle, feeder cattle and lean hog charts could all be characterized as sideways so far this week.
DTN Livestock Closing: Deferred Hog Contracts Lead Tuesday's Gains
Photo: Kansas State University Live cattle, feeder cattle and especially lean hog futures all managed to hold onto impressive gains throughout the Tuesday trading session. Livestock futures contracts, particularly deferred contracts, were boosted Tuesday by a lower U.S. dollar and consolidating charts that were friendly to some upward movement as long as it didn’t retest last week’s highs.
DTN Livestock Midday: Impressive Midday Gains
Photo: Kansas State University Impressive Midday Gains for Cattle, Hogs Livestock futures contracts are green across the board in the middle of Tuesday’s trading session, although none of the gains are extensive enough to take the charts out of their sideways consolidation. Lean hogs, the market most in need of a boost, are seeing gains of up to $2 per cwt in some deferred 2021 contracts.

DTN Livestock Closing: Hesitant Markets November 16, 2020 By Elaine Kub, Contributing Analyst Photo: Kansas State University Mixed Monday Close for Hesitant Livestock Markets Amid relatively light trading volumes, live and feeder cattle contracts tested both sides of unchanged, but the downward slide of most hog contracts continued unabated.

Photo: Blair Fannin, Texas AgriLife Extension End-of-Week Slump Continues A few contracts show small gains, but most live cattle, feeder cattle, and lean hog futures contracts are moving lower at the middle of Friday’s session.
DTN Livestock Closing: Lean Hog Prices Persist
Photo: NCRS Lean Hog Price Rally Persists Through the Week Amid relatively light trading volumes, live and feeder cattle contracts tested both sides of unchanged, but the upward momentum of the hog market remained firm. Cattle feed lot. Photo: K-State Research and Extension - Creative Commons Small Gains in Cattle Contracts Fail to Override Trend Hog trade remains directed upward, supported by higher carcass values and continued export expectations.
DTN Grain Midday: Mixed Trade
©Debra L Ferguson Stock Photography Corn is narrowly mixed, soybeans are 4 to 6 cents lower, and wheat is 2 to 6 cents higher. CORN Corn trade is mixed with the back months showing more support as the May contract gets close to delivery.
