Reading from the 2024 SFPA Elgin Award Nominees This is my sixth year reviewing books from the SFPA (Science Fiction and Fantasy Poetry Association) Elgin Award for best speculative poetry book. A full list of nominated books is available on the SFPA website. This year’s award chair is Felicia Martínez, who I would like to thank for diligently tracking nominations.

Okay, only on special occasions now. Every alcoholic knows this little cha-cha. A few weeks later, my partner’s brother’s wedding: a perfect occasion. I tried to hide from my partner just how many I was having.
The Hands By Marty Gervais Guernica Editions, 96 pages, $20 A mainstay of Windsor’s thriving literary scene, Marty Gervais has published more than a dozen books of poetry and serves as the city’s Poet Laureate Emeritus. He was a reporter and columnist for the Windsor Star for many years, and in part “The Hands” offers a poetic gallery of some of the celebrities he interviewed, including Muhammad Ali, Mother Teresa and Leonard Cohen.

Conyer Clayton is an Ottawa based artist who aims to live with compassion, gratitude, and awe. Her most recent chapbooks are Trust Only the Beasts in the Water (above/ground press, 2019), / (post ghost press, 2019), Undergrowth (bird, buried press, 2018) and Mitosis (In/Words Magazine and Press, 2018). She released a collaborative album with Nathanael Larochette, If the river stood still, in August 2018.
