Between federal and state income taxes and self-employment tax, prospects of a large tax bill can feel overwhelming. Year-end tax planning can address this concern and is an essential tool for farm financial management. In general, the best tax planning strategy is to maintain consistent taxable income across years. This minimizes taxes owed over a longer span of years.

A Brief Explanation of Stepped-Up Basis
By Corey Clark and Chris Bardenhagen Farmers often want to pass their farmland on to their successors. Some individuals choose to sell the land, some choose to gift the land and others choose to pass the land on as an inheritance. All of these choices have income tax consequences. When real estate property is sold, a “taxable event” occurs. Many sales of farmland result in capital gains, which occur when the sale price exceeds the tax basis. Capital gains are taxable income.

Tax Planning in the Summer? Starting Early Could Yield Results
By Corey Clark We tend to think of tax planning as something we do in December, particularly because this time of year is busy. However, a mid-year check on your tax planning can have a real benefit by the end of the year. Despite increasing input costs, a year with high commodity prices and potentially good yields means tax planning will likely be very important.

Financial records are essential for tax preparation and loan applications, as well as being the foundation for financial analysis. QuickBooks is one of the most widely used financial software packages for maintaining and managing farm financial records. It is a powerful tool but was designed for small businesses, so utilizing the software effectively for agriculture can be difficult.
