A July 23 New York Times full page ad implored; “Let Cuba Live!” Readers may have expected the ad to offer solidarity to anti-regime protests and to call for an end to Cuba’s 62 year old Communist dictatorship with one party rule enforced by a police state. But no, the ad urged removal of USA sanctions on Cuba, which it claimed are the real cause of Cuban suffering, repeating the claims of Cuba’s dictatorship. There was no mention of human rights or the appeals of protesters.
The Ninth of Av, or Tisha B’av in Hebrew, is the day when Jews around the world fast and mourn to remember the destruction of the Temple in 70AD and the expulsion of the Jews from Jerusalem in 132. It was also in 132 when Romans renamed the land Palestine after the Jewish people’s historic rivals, the Philistines. It is also the day the United Church of Christ (UCC) chose to affirm, by significant margin, their latest declaration against the State of Israel.
Baptist-bashing is a longtime American sport. And there was lots of it before the recent Southern Baptist Convention in Nashville, which I attended as my first ever. Lots of media portrayed the SBC as a cauldron of racism, misogyny and sexual abuse. Said one tweet: tear it down like a Confederate statue. We’re in a tear-down moment in American culture where there’s little patience with institutions amid visceral demands for emotional gratification to replace practicality.
