America’s Gloomy 250thAt the 1865 presidential inauguration Vice President Andrew Johnson was drunk. Evidently nervous, he drank three glasses of whiskey before his disjointed speech, which ranged from inaudible whispers to bombastic loud rants. It was widely denounced as disgraceful.

Dissing America’s 250th

Presbyterians were central to founding America. Sadly, they are now much faded, and the chief Presbyterian denomination is specifically refusing to recognize America’s 250th. At their current General Assembly, the 1-million-member Presbyterian Church (USA) rejected a thoughtful resolution to honor America’s birthday. Not uncoincidentally, the PCUSA also reported losing another 27,000 members in 2025, taking it down to 1,019,003. Sixty years ago, its predecessor bodies numbered over 4 million.

United Methodism vs Asbury Seminary

United Methodism’s removing Asbury Theological Seminary, located outside Lexington, Kentucky, from its list of approved schools for persons seeking ordination was inevitable but arrived quicker than expected. Asbury is America’s eighth largest seminary, with nearly 900 full time students. (View data for America’s seminaries here.)  The top seven seminaries are Baptist. The top United Methodist Seminary is Duke Divinity School, with 592 full-time students, ranking 16th in size.
