Assistive technology in humanitarian settings - Inequalities revisited
The situation of assistive technology (AT) in low- and middle-income countries is challenging, and the challenges are many. High demand collides with low supply, awareness and service quality. Barriers related to costs, access and procurement are well documented: in some regions, as little as 3% of the population reports access to AT, especially in rural areas (World Health Organization & United Nations Children’s Fund [WHO & UNICEF], Citation2022).
Mind the gap: Sex and gender disparities in mobility assistive technology
In 2009, I worked as a physiotherapist with Doctors Without Borders in rural Sri Lanka. We managed over 80 patients with war-related spinal cord injuries. I was thrilled when we received the three-wheeler wheelchairs for self-propulsion on rough terrain to replace the cumbersome hospital wheelchairs. But as the men adopted these wheelchairs with visible enthusiasm, spending hours on the new basketball court, the women reacted differently.
