1 INTRODUCTION In a time of growing concern related to the potential impacts of climate change, the ability to understand and forecast severe meteorological events becomes even more critical for the welfare of the general public. Particularly intense phenomena such as heavy precipitation, heat waves, windstorms, marine storms and storm surges need to be predicted in time to be properly managed.
