By CPABC’s Regulation and Registrar Team The profession reached a significant milestone in 2025, as June 24 marked not only the 10-year anniversary of CPABC’s proclamation but also the date on which members with legacy designations gained the option of using the CPA designation on its own.

As part of CPABC’s commitment to protecting the public interest, we require that all members who offer professional accounting services to the public be properly licensed by CPABC and carry adequate professional liability insurance. On occasion, we’ve become aware of CPAs engaging in public practice without the appropriate licensing.

The question of when to report—or self-report—the conduct of a CPA or candidate to CPABC remains one of the most common questions we receive. Accordingly, we’ve prepared this refresher article1 to remind registrants2 of the appropriate actions that should be taken when dealing with various ethical issues.
