KALONA Take a look at the dozen photo finalists in the Optimists of Kalona’s student photo contest and you’ll find images capturing a misty dawn over a trailer park, lightning breaking over a pancake-flat field, and a perched robin munching a moth. They all contain something fascinating, a moment in time when a young person looked up, framed a shot, and clicked, capturing it so it could be shared. In a frazzling world, it’s par to stop noticing the sunset, the moonrise, the shapes in the clouds.

KALONA An interesting thing happens when you appear in a video available all over the world: you become recognizable. A celebrity of sorts. The face of a place. When a German couple arrived in Kalona about a month ago, they headed straight to the Chamber office for a Byways tour. When Daniel Nisly brought the bus around to pick them up, he saw their faces light up. “Oh, it’s you!” they exclaimed, recognizing him from the video they had seen back home.
