Former diplomat reflects on Jimmy Carter’s life of service and faith [column]
I am somewhat surprised (but encouraged) by the outpouring of respect and general sense of mourning many people in this country and around the world have expressed after the Dec. 29 passing of former President Jimmy Carter. A day of national mourning was observed Thursday, as Carter’s state funeral was held in Washington, D.C. But expressions of sorrow over his death, and appreciation for his 100 years of life, continue.
Examining student protests and the assertions protesters make [column]
As university students prepare for the summer break, a relative few are drawing attention for their protests in opposition to the Israel-Hamas war. These protesters assert that Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians, and they are demanding that their universities divest from companies doing business with Israel. Jewish leaders and U.S. officials, including President Joe Biden, have rejected these assertions, and they warn against a rising tide of antisemitism on college campuses.
Examining why violence is rising around the globe [column]
In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus warns his followers: “You will hear of wars and rumors of wars but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places.” While for Christians Jesus’ prophecy presages the end of one age and the beginning of another, many non-Christians today also observe that the world is not as it should be.
Fetterman, Oz should pay more heed to foreign policy [column]
The U.S. senatorial campaigns of Mehmet Oz and Lt. Gov. John Fetterman have been focused on domestic issues, such as crime and the economy. While this is understandable considering the many challenges Pennsylvanians face in both of these areas, the candidates have been generally silent on foreign policy. In fact, during Tuesday’s debate, only one question was asked related to this topic. This is not healthy in our democracy.
It’s Never Too Late to Find the Kosovo War’s Missing Persons
My assignment to the US Mission in Kosovo (now embassy) in 2005 is unforgettable. Although I had covered the region at the US Department of State in Washington, DC since 2002, living and working in Kosovo was a meaningful experience, both professionally and personally. Not only did I enjoy the local culture, including the infamous macchiatos, but I also developed many meaningful friendships.
Examining abortion restrictions around the globe [column]
In the lead-up to the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the frequency that students raised the issue of abortion in my courses increased exponentially. As a comparative scholar who monitors human rights in different parts of the world, I realized that what was missing within our discussions was a global, comparative context to our debate.
Americans, demand better
Raise your hand if you are exhausted from the incessant political turmoil that continues to unfold in the United States. While almost everyone is hoping for a quieter 2021, experience tells us the road to a better democracy will not be quick or automatic. In addition to holding our political leaders accountable for this morass, we (the people) must also abandon the notion that only politicians can fix the ills of this country.

Agriculture is a Global Market
Imagine a world where food grown in Iowa isn’t exported to other nations. Imagine that while the major industries in the U.S. advance to keep up with the changing times, the farming industry is stagnant, using age-old systems that won’t sustain the world’s quickly growing global population. Imagine if every American farmer is told that the food that they produce isn’t for the greater good. This is the kind of world that The Des Moines Register’s editorial imagined — and it warrants review.
Consolidation, innovation in agriculture requires strong leadership
Farmers across Iowa and the nation need to weigh in on the trends in agriculture. As one of the top grain and livestock and poultry producers in the world, Iowa has long benefited from a strong and lasting foothold in the global marketplace. Last year alone, the state produced a record high 2.5 billion bushels of corn and has led the nation in corn production for 22 consecutive years.
What is the 'Alien Agenda?'
Third of a four-part series IN EARLIER ARTICLES of this series, we discussed some of the experiences of alien abduction. What is it and what it is not? What are its effects on the experiencer? But what actually goes on during an alien abduction? What seems to be happening — and why? What are the aliens up to? Last month, I described the case of “Evelyn,” an experiencer I featured heavily in my book, The Cosmic Bridge.
