Commentary: Restore expanded Child Tax Credit for immigrant children
Over the past several weeks, we’ve reflected on the myriad contributions of Latinos to our country and our work to build a more prosperous nation for everyone. There is a passionate debate underway in Congress and around the country about how we recover from the pandemic-fueled economic crisis in a way that addresses historic inequities.
Commentary: Teach kids a more nuanced, accurate view of U.S. history
Last year, I visited the Greenwood Cultural Center in Oklahoma to attend a community organized event on the Tulsa race massacre of 1921— one of the most terrorizing massacres of Black people in U.S. history. The experience served as yet another painful reminder that our nation’s long history of violence, bloodshed and terrorism against Black and brown people is seldom memorialized and very rarely acknowledged in American history curriculum.
Op-Ed | How New York can address its dismal racial achievement gap in education
Sign up for our PoliticsNY newsletter for the latest coverage and to stay informed about the 2021 elections in your district and across NYC New York’s public education system has been plagued by severe racial and economic disparities for decades, and far too many promising students of color have been left behind as a result. With students of color now making up a majority of New York’s public school students, lawmakers must address the state’s deeply entrenched racial education achievement gap.
Commentary: Separate and unequal: students' access to broadband
The gulf between students with high-speed internet access and those without it, often called the digital divide, is a tragic phenomenon affecting hundreds of thousands of New York students. COVID has made it impossible to continue ignoring the devastating cost of these digital inequities now that nearly all essential activities are online.
Give our students the teachers they deserve
It’s a very simple win-win: Students of color who have a teacher of color are more likely to perform better in the classroom, and teachers themselves benefit from improvements in recruitment and overall job retention. Unfortunately, today, too many New York students don’t see themselves in their teachers, school leaders, principals or superintendents. Across the state, students of color have become the majority, yet an estimated 80% of New York teachers are white.
Commentary: Colorado's elections system is a model for New York
I recently moved to New York from Colorado and was shocked at how antiquated voting laws are in the Empire State. Coming from a state that passed and successfully implemented the option for every voter to vote by mail, I know firsthand there is a stronger path forward for New Yorkers. Once the coronavirus pandemic broke out, I was thankful to see Gov. Andrew Cuomo boldly advance voting rights by using mail-in ballots to expand absentee voting.
Crisanta Duran: With Colorado as a model, Gardner should assuage GOP concerns on voting by mail
Americans shouldn’t have to sacrifice their health to participate in our democracy. Over the past month, we’ve seen voters put their lives at risk in order to exercise their right to vote. Indeed, seven Wisconsin voters contracted COVID-19 because they were forced to vote in person without adequate safety measures in place. To ensure that every voter can safely cast their ballot this November, we need to start to focus on election preparedness immediately.
Crisanta Duran: “Never again” must be more than just words
Our Colorado communities know all too well the deep pain caused by gun violence. From the Columbine shooting in 1999 to the May shooting at the STEM school of Highlands Ranch, gun violence has made a lasting impact on our communities. The shootings of the past couple of weeks in Dayton, Ohio, and Chicago, Illinois, and those by white supremacist terrorists in Gilroy, California, and El Paso, Texas, serve as reminders of the incredible pain gun violence has wrought on our country.
Opinion: Health care is a right, not just for the privileged
Sometimes you just have to take a leap into the unknown when you see that the status quo is simply not working. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt did just that when he signed Social Security into law. In 1965, President Lyndon Johnson did the same with Medicare, which provides health care to all Americans over 65, regardless of income or medical history. At the time, these programs were both wildly experimental, but not too many people today would argue that they were mistakes.
Opinion: For domestic violence victims, the price of immigration-related fears may be nothing short of death
Requests for domestic violence services are up at Latina Safehouse in Denver, as reported recently by The Colorado Sun. Victims who are undocumented say their abusers have threatened to report them to the government. But, acting director of U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Matthew Albence, said he doesn’t necessarily believe that’s true. Instead, he said any decreases in prosecutions would be due to the deportation of offenders. What should you believe?
‘Nobody Owns A Seat’: Duran Aims To Unseat Rep. DeGette In 2020
By Shaun BoydFebruary 25, 2019 at 6:03 pm DENVER (CBS4) – A big shake-up in the 2020 political landscape. Instead of trying to unseat republican Sen. Cory Gardner, former Colorado House Speaker Crisanta Duran will try to unseat one of her own. Duran announced she will challenge fellow democrat Diana DeGette in a primary. DeGette has held the Congressional District 1 seat for more than two decades.
Crisanta Duran: Much at stake for Colorado with Kavanaugh nomination
This June, Majority Leader KC Becker, Senate Minority Leader Leroy Garcia and I urged U.S. Sens. Cory Gardner and Michael Bennet to postpone a Senate vote on President Trump's nominee to the Supreme Court until January 2019, after the November elections. Given the enormity of the issues at stake and the need to carefully vet the nominee to the nation's highest court, it is undeniably the right thing to do.
DURAN | Colorado does care about separated families
Last weekend, I traveled to the port of entry in Tornillo, Texas, where hundreds of children are detained in tents and kept away from their families. It’s been labelled a “tent city,” and it looks as bleak as it sounds. Temperatures reached into the triple digits that weekend. The responsibility of this manufactured humanitarian crisis lies in the hands of President Trump and his administration.
Helping Coloradans pay for quality child care
Child care is a critical component of a high-quality education early in life. Interactions with other children and exposure to letters and books help prepare kids for kindergarten. The type of environment to which children are exposed during their first five years has a significant impact on their chances of success later in life. When kids attend quality child care programs, they are more likely to start school ready to learn, graduate from high school and stay in the work force.
GOP attacks on Affordable Care Act jeopardize Colorado health, lives - Colorado Politics
The newest iteration of congressional legislation to gut the Affordable Care Act — the Graham-Cassidy bill — would be devastating for Colorado. Politicians in Washington, D.C., keep trying to unilaterally impose upon America their vision of far more costly health care that covers far fewer people. This is more of the same.
Colorado Water Plan: Where is it one year
In the American West, nothing is more vital or sacred than water. Colorado has a rich and complicated history with the resource, one that is colored by some successes, but also many conflicts and challenges. But because of the work of thousands of Coloradans on our state’s first-ever comprehensive water plan, our water future could be very bright indeed. That bright future, however, will require a lot more hard work. A little more than one year ago, Gov.

Colo House majority leader: I’m in for Hillary
The presidential primary season is over, and the nation now turns to one of the most historic general elections ever — and the stakes couldn’t be higher, especially for women. Donald Trump has a decades-long history of disrespecting women. Trump has compared women to pigs, degraded them and judged them based on their looks.

Why Colorado Democrats should choose Hillary Clinton
Picture this: It's 1973. You just graduated from Yale Law School, one of only about a dozen women out of a class size of nearly 200. Like most of your peers, you could easily join a prestigious corporate law firm in New York, instantly catapulting yourself into a six-figure income bracket. But you take a different course. You decide to go work for a nonprofit — the Children's Defense Fund, founded by prominent civil rights leader Marian Wright Edelman.
Guest Commentary: Reaching the true potential of Colorado's workforce
Colorado is a great place to live and work, but there are some disturbing trends that, if not addressed, could make us less competitive and hobble our resurgent economy. One of them is the gap between career opportunities for our young people and their ability to take advantage of them.
