Proteomic and metagenomic insights into prehistoric Spanish Levantine Rock Art
Both the culture-independent microbial characterization and the proteomic strategies described in this work are unprecedented in studies of prehistoric rock art. Previous studies analyzed the microbial communities associated to Palaeolithic cave art in France9 and northern Spain18,19 by means of culture-dependent techniques and molecular approaches such as DGGE (denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis) analysis or 16S rRNA cloning and sequencing.
Thermoelectric heat exchange and growth regulation in a continuous yeast culture
In a previous work, we described the first microbial thermoelectric cell (MTC), a system designed for batch cultures that allows the partial conversion of microbial metabolic heat into electricity. MTC is based on the Seebeck effect, a thermoelectric property that allows direct conversion of temperature differences to electricity voltage.

Selecting Microbial Strains from Pine Tree Resin: Biotechnological Applications from a Terpene World
Resin is a chemical and physical defensive barrier secreted by many plants, especially coniferous trees, with insecticidal and antimicrobial properties. The degradation of terpenes, the main components accounting for the toxicity of resin, is highly relevant for a vast range of biotechnological processes, including bioremediation.

A highly diverse, desert-like microbial biocenosis on solar panels in a Mediterranean city
Sampling was performed during the summer solstice of 2013 and 2014. Sampling consisted of a simple harvesting procedure, by pouring sterile PBS (sodium phosphate buffer) on the panel and immediately harvesting the liquid by strongly and repeatedly scraping the surface with a modified window cleaner with an autoclaved silicone tube measuring 5 mm in diameter.
The coffee-machine bacteriome: biodiversity and colonisation of the wasted coffee tray leach
The waste coffee in the capsule container of nine different Nespresso machines operated for at least one year was sampled (Fig. 1A). In one case (CityZ model), the cup tray was also sampled independently as it does not connect with the capsule container. The high throughput sequencing and analysis of the 16S rRNA gene amplicons from all the machines revealed a significant bacterial diversity, with the total number of identified genera ranging from 35 to 67.
