by Miguel Matos ( 10 comments ) Etat Libre d'Orange (created in 2006) used to be that iconoclast brand that always surprised us with innovative fragrances that sometimes were even difficult to wear or hard to classify. These ones created a reputation that allowed the brand to thrive and get famous all around the world. But things slowly started to get boring from 2014 on, when the brand launched Cologne, the first sign that sales would start to get more important than art and provocation.

Why do we love independent perfumers? They don't have launch plans for the year ahead like luxury brands do. Even niche companies lately know very well that they are expected to release one or several fragrances a year (earlier - for the exhibitions, now - just to stay in sight of their fans). But independent perfumers are a special group. They can spend years improving their fragrances, completing and polishing their concepts until they are fully satisfied with the result.
