Rituals, Runaways, and the Haitian Revolution
‘A compelling, elegantly written, and brilliantly conceived study in the development of racial definitions and solidarity. Eddins bravely opens windows and doors to a subversive and proud Haiti, and its role in the global context.
Haiti’s New Political Worlds
Haiti is, arguably, the birthplace of the modern world. One can no longer speak of issues around slavery and freedom, anticolonial struggle, revolutionary activity, and racial justice without mentioning—or, more decisively, centering—the Haitian Revolution, which began in 1791 and birthed the independent Haitian state in 1804. Prior to the Revolution, Haiti was the first Caribbean island to be encroached upon by 15th-century Spanish conquistadors.
Black Freedom Is the Seed for All Freedom
“Freedom is coming tomorrow,” sing the young Black people in the South African musical Sarafina!, “get ready, mama, prepare for your freedom.” A 1987 theatrical musical that became a 1992 movie, Sarafina! portrayed South African life under apartheid and Black people’s fight for freedom. This song, “Freedom Is Coming,” gestures toward a freedom that was still to come, a freedom that was not yet there, for Black South Africans. In many ways, such freedom still remains elusive.

This paper explores the possible existence of organic reproductive justice actions among enslaved mothers and pregnant women in colonial Haiti (Saint Domingue) with specific focus on how marronnage – escape from slavery – provided them opportunities to exert power over their lives, bodies and biological reproduction.

On the lives of fugitives: Runaway slave advertisement databases
African descended women, men, and children who freed themselves from slavery through daring, life-threatening escapes seem to have captured the public imagination in popular culture as well as academia.
