Award-winning Writer, Director and Choreographer Lanre Malaolu’s experimental dance short The Conversation – which was commissioned by The Uncertain Kingdom – is a fluid movement-based piece which directly confronts the challenges Black men and women face in conveying their racial experience to white partners.

Dominica Harrison’s short animation Chado is both a magical journey into an enchanted Russian forest and an exploration of first experiencing emotional turmoil at a young age. Harrison embraces a practical hands-on approach to her animation, preferring the physicality of the form over a purely computer generated model, allowing the tactility and her personality to shine through every frame of the film.

One of the first shorts I watched at ​SXSW Online 2021, Mitch Kalisa’s Play It Safe immediately set a high bar for the festival with its tensely constructed depictions of unconscious racism. Kalisa tells his story through many nuances and subtleties that highlight the prevalence of these issues in seemingly liberal environments, in this case, a drama school.
