1 Introduction Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized primarily by the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc) (Poewe et al. 2017), which convey movement-related information to the striatum (Howe and Dombeck 2016). The ensuing loss of dopamine inputs to the dorsal striatum dysregulates local neuronal circuits and leads to the motor symptoms of PD (Parker et al. 2018; Maltese et al. 2021; Zemel et al. 2022).
