Abiotic Iron Precipitation and Its Influence on Groundwater Flow in Subterranean Estuaries Under Tidal Forcing
1 Introduction Within coastal aquifers, fresh groundwater and seawater intersect in zones where both submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) and seawater intrusion occur (Robinson et al., 2018; Xin et al., 2022). SGD conveys considerable volumes of water (including both freshwater and recirculated seawater) to the ocean (Robinson et al., 2018; Xin et al., 2022), along with significant quantities of redox-sensitive solutes such as ferrous iron (Fe2+).
Variance Budgeting for Probability Tables in the Unresolved Resonance Region
Resonance self-shielding in the unresolved resonance region (URR) is driven by the variance of the cross-section distribution, which probability tables are designed to represent. This paper identifies two mechanisms by which standard nuclear data processing distorts this variance. First, the multiplicative normalization used to enforce mean consistency between the probability table and the evaluated cross section inadvertently rescales the variance.
