As the amount of aberrations increases, the focal volume (i.e. the point spread function of the input beam) is distorted and enlarged, so that the maximum intensity in the focal volume decreases. It is therefore expected that the image intensity metric (mean intensity in the image) is maximum when there is no aberration in the system. However, when considering a heterogeneously labeled 3D sample, this is not true anymore.
