CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (WBOY) — This year, Salem native Elysia Cain ran the Boston Marathon after receiving a sponsorship from her work. Two weeks later, she ran her second marathon in Pittsburgh. Despite these back-to-back feats, running hasn’t always come easy. Cain has Chiari Malformation Type 1, a condition that causes part of the brain to go into the spinal canal. When she was five years old, Cain had Chiari decompression surgery, where a shunt was placed to regulate spinal fluid.
