A final note from Mayor Dale Janway Original
We hope that these updates have been helpful to you over the years. While we began putting them out during the start of my term, we significantly increased the number of them each week during COVID, because we knew there were a lot of people out there wanting more information. Thank you all for keeping up with us as we’ve talked about the many developments in our community. Over the past week, we’ve enjoyed celebrations at the new splash pad, at the Halagueno Arts Park, and on top of C-Hill.

Cavemen Strong program will honor educators Dec. 7
We will be honoring five outstanding retired teachers as part of this year’s “Cavemen Strong” program, which will take place the evening of Dec. 7 at the college. This has been a great way to remind our educators that their contributions have never been forgotten. One of this year’s educators being honored is now teaching at the Carlsbad Prep Academy, though she previously retired from Carlsbad Municipal Schools. Lindsay Garza began teaching at Monterrey Elementary in 1995.

The large Zia Symbol in the corner of Ray Anaya San Jose Plaza was the creation of Betty Blea, a renowned construction expert who has received awards across the state. Drew Pearson special guest at Carlsbad Energy Summit Oct. 19
It’s hard to believe that we’re just a couple weeks away from our annual energy summit. As we’ve mentioned in the past, we’re very excited to have Drew Pearson speaking as our special guest this year. We had a great conversation with the former Dallas Cowboy, and he told us he’s looking forward to his trip to Carlsbad. Drew will speak at around lunchtime during our Oct. 19 summit at the civic center. As we’ve done in the past, local high school students have been selected to ask Pearson questions.
Plan to participate in local elections
Did you know that several local elections have been settled with a difference of one or two votes over the past few years? If you ever need a few examples of why a single vote matters, there are plenty of examples. The Permian Strategic Partnership is currently running a “Get out the Vote” campaign in both New Mexico and Texas. Despite our area’s massive importance when it comes to energy issues, our voter turnout is not always what we would like it to be.
Cavern City Renaissance Festival returns Sept. 29-30
The second Cavern City Renaissance Festival will be coming up this weekend (Sept. 29 and 30) at the Carlsbad Beach. This event is organized by a group of local residents, including Shay and Marin Gregory, who decided they wanted to see such an event in Carlsbad after visiting other festivals. Nobody knew what to expect with last year’s event, but it sold 4,000 tickets and was incredibly successful and well organized.
John Wooten honored with sculpture Original
Dale Janway Mayor, City of Carlsbad When considering a list of Carlsbad’s citizens who have had the greatest impact on the world, John Wooten certainly belongs near the top. After a remarkable high school and college football career, Wooten was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in 1959, where he would play for nine seasons before finishing his career at Washington.
Drew Pearson, former Dallas Cowboy, keynotes Carlsbad Energy Summit Original
Dale Janway Mayor, City of Carlsbad Every year, we try to have a special guest attend and speak at our energy summit. While the overall focus of the annual event is educational, we also believe it important to have one motivational speaker to bring everything together. Past guests have included Brian Urlacher, Randy White, T. Boone Pickens, Steve Stucker and Tony Dorsett. This year, we’re pleased to announce that former Dallas Cowboy Drew Pearson will be attending as our special guest.
Student attendance an important part of education Original
On Friday, I had the opportunity to visit Cottonwood Elementary School, where I read a proclamation on the importance of student attendance. School districts across the country have struggled with attendance rates for several years. The City appreciates being invited by the school district to show our support for addressing this issue. This is a very pressing concern that has an impact not only our present, but also our future.

Carlsbad’s 16th of September is just around the corner, and a group of volunteers are working to develop a celebration that is bigger than ever. Thank you to everyone who participated in a great Homecoming parade on Monday night. We especially enjoyed seeing all of the vehicles with members of the Homecoming Court for both Carlsbad High School as well as the Early College High School. Thanks as always to members of the band and color guard, who were the only ones walking in the parade and did a great job. There were also some very creative floats this year. The weather was cooperative until the very end of the parade, when a storm hit.

In the past, residents have driven across the country to assist those in need after Hurricane Katrina, the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and many other national emergencies. The ongoing tragedy in Hawaii has already killed at least 100 and destroyed many more homes. There is a great need for disaster relief for those who are interested in helping.

Thanks again to the many local nonprofits and industry partners who have helped make sure that our students are well supplied while returning to school.
Congratulations to NMOGA's new leader Original
We’ve said before that Carlsbad is at the epicenter of our domestic oil and gas production. That’s not just talk – Eddy and Lea Counties regularly record two of the highest rig counts in the nation. It’s also certainly no secret that much of our state’s budget comes from the oil and gas industry. It is therefore absolutely vital that our state’s oil and gas industry be represented by someone who understands Carlsbad and Southeast New Mexico.

We know this will be a very successful investment.

However, many of Wooten’s most incredible accomplishments either were outside of his football career, or came after his initial career playing with the NFL concluded.
Carlsbad school district, SENM College partner to train electricians
