What Margaret Atwood’s tarot cards and new story with Amazon reveal
How do beliefs inform actions? In Margaret Atwood’s new short story, “My Evil Mother” (free for Prime and Kindle Unlimited members in eBook and audiobook), a woman remembers when her mother issued a prophecy: If she didn’t break up with her high-school boyfriend immediately, the relationship would end in a disastrous fate. Her mother had consulted the tarot, and the Universe didn’t like them together.

Rookie cards are selling for millions and NFTs are thriving. The question isn’t just how big the bubble will grow but what will happen once it pops
Literary Review of Canada
Mothers can be at once entirely familiar and complete mysteries to their children. The women who name us and hold an almost unbearable power in shaping our identities are elusive. Certain facets of their selves and chapters of their histories are closed off. As she opens her memoir, the poet Damian Rogers recalls the time her mother escaped from her nursing home in Buffalo, New York.
What I've Learned from What My Mother Has Forgotten
Ten years ago, after my mother was diagnosed with dementia at age sixty-one, she was in free fall. She lived alone and had lost her job. In a state of desperation, she began a mnemonic project of her own design. She tried to memorize a list of 150 animal names. I didn’t know where this idea came from. It seemed like her plan was to prove to the doctors that there was nothing wrong with her.
Reflections on Two Years as Walrus Poetry Editor
Since my first book of poetry came out in 2009, I’ve learned that people are fascinated by the relationship between poetry and money. I get asked point-blank by strangers how much I make, and what I do to make it. The thing about poets is that they often don’t have a day job. To survive, many of us need five day jobs. As long as I’ve been writing, I’ve been juggling a lot of gigs within the literary community. The best part about being so busy is that my head is filled with interesting voices.
A Letter to Leonard Cohen
Soaking in the tub the other night, I thought about the scene in Ladies and Gentlemen . . . Mr. Leonard Cohen where you’re taking a bath and scrawl “caveat emptor” on the wall. I decided to write you a letter to explain how, as a girl, I fell in love with your song “Suzanne” and how this was the beginning of my life as a poet. People must write you all the time. When you create a body of work like yours, people see themselves in it.
Poet's Sampler: Damian Rogers
When I first encountered Toronto writer Damian Rogers’s latest manuscript, Dear Leader, I dreamt her poems. I had been reading them for days, and in my sleep a voice-over voice said to me: “Murder of Crows.” And then I saw trees draped with knowing crows, strip mall parking lots, waste, cold stars, and a terrific crow-studded sunset. Like this image, Rogers’s poems are ominously beautiful and sage; they lay bare discordant fractures.
Damian Rogers on Elise Partridge
I think the exile of poetry is also the exile of the best of humankind. —Octavio Paz Why shouldn’t I drift off like a lost balloon? But you gave me another gift: “I’ll carry you in my heart till my last day on earth.” —Elise Partridge One week ago today [February 7], the poet Elise Partridge died. She was 56. In about six weeks, finished copies of her third book, The Exiles’ Gallery, will be printed. It breaks my heart that she wasn’t able to hold one in her hand.
