You don't need a whole freezer full of faith to get started
When I was a much younger man and had just begun working as a musician in Branson, Missouri, I lived a ways out of town, out a two-lane highway in one of a half-dozen rickety cabins in an old, dilapidated tourist court that the locals all called “Green Acres.” They called it that because all the cabins were all a faded, bilious green, and because they all looked like something from the television show.
True riches can’t be counted
The other day at the Kroger, a blinking vending machine grabbed my attention on the way out the door: "Mega Millions Jackpot…estimated $348 million Friday! That’s a lot of millions, and after some brief calculating – factoring in cash payout option and taxes - I figured I could net a cool $100 million, plus change. Still a lot of millions, and I imagined myself floating on a chair in my Olympic-sized pool, sipping something cool and coconutty through a straw.
Ocean Minded: How Does Surfing Affect Our Mental Health?
The world is changing and with it so is your everyday, recreational surfer. Though what we do remains the same, how we feel about it has certainly expanded since I was a wave-starved east coast grommet. In those days, performance was the mantra and woe betide anyone who sought to challenge the status quo, by perhaps suggesting surfing might be fun or indeed anything else at all. Particle pollution: out of sight, but not out of mind?
‘What the eye doesn't see, the heart doesn't grieve over’, or so the saying goes. But it’s not a phrase that holds up in a world of pervasive air pollution. Particle pollution, more specifically, is a term that describes the mixture of liquid and solid droplets in our air. There are a variety of substances that fit under this term, some of the most common being pollen, metals, soot, and organic compounds. We are breathing in particles every second, whether they are visible or not.
How agriculture can enrich ecosystems
Agriculture has a role to play in addressing many of the pressing challenges we face today, from climate mitigation and adaptation, to quality nutrition for a growing population, to sustainable livelihoods. When agriculture is purely extractive, it exacerbates all of these challenges.
Spinach tissue used as a scaffold for engineered human heart
Scientists have used tissue taken from a spinach leaf to provide a supportive structure for vessels in an engineered human heart, enabling the blood to flow through a network of tiny plant-derived 'veins'. Creating resilient vascular networks is currently a limiting factor for organ and tissue engineering, says Joshua Gershlak, a graduate student at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in Massachusetts who co-authored the study, published in Biomaterials.
Voice analytics technology could reveal heart disease
The Tel Aviv-based start-up Beyond Verbal Communication has released a study showing a correlation between heart disease and vocal characteristics. It aims to apply its vocal analysis technology, already being used to analyse the emotional state of consumers in call centres, to detect cardiovascular diseases. Blind tests have already shown it to identify known conditions with high degrees of accuracy.
