With Jaouen in goal, youngsters Leo Shahar and Dylan Charlton occupy the full-back berths and Burn partners Schär in central defence.

That includes the introduction of Joelinton, who takes the armband worn by Malick Thiaw in Spain at the weekend. Lewis Hall also returns to the side, while Yoane Wissa's two goals at Mestalla earn him a starting spot. Anthony Elanga was stretchered off in Spain, but is fit enough to start here.

The Germany international's last start came against Sunderland in March, although he had come off the bench in the last three matches. But he's in from the start at the City Ground in place of Joe Willock, while Lewis Hall makes his 100th appearance in black and white. Hall, who grew up as a Magpies supporter, will look to mark a century of appearances for his boyhood club as he replaces Lewis Miley, who will miss the remainder of the season after fracturing his fibula during the week.

Nick Pope made an important save from Hinshelwood inside the first two minutes - then Carlos Baleba's long range curler struck the top of the Leazes End crossbar as Brighton made the stronger start. But the home side came close themselves in the 11th minute when Osula drifted in from the left and fired just wide. Seconds later, Jacob Murphy beat Bart Verbruggen to a Bruno Guimarães ball over the top.

Marcus Tavernier - a former Academy player with the Magpies - struck first for the Cherries just after the half-hour mark, meaning Eddie Howe's men will need to come from behind if they're to avoid a third successive Premier League defeat. Jacob Ramsey, Harvey Barnes and Anthony Elanga came into the side and two of them were involved in the first opening of the afternoon, in the fifth minute.

And Fabian Schär has also suffered a setback in his return from an ankle injury, with the defender now ruled out for a further month after undergoing a 'small operation.' United have had three weeks to digest their Tyne-Wear derby defeat to Sunderland, with Eddie Howe facing the press on Friday for the first time since the immediate aftermath of that game against the Black Cats.
Newcastle United 1 Sunderland 2
The two sides hadn't met at St. James' Park for a decade but Sunderland's strong second half showing saw them complete a Premier League double over the Magpies. "Very, very painful - most of all, painful for our supporters and they're the ones I think about now," said Eddie Howe. "Once you haven't performed, and you know the size of the game and you don't deliver, you expect to be criticised and you understand why.

United were ultimately beaten in Barcelona despite twice levelling the game, and the tie, in the first half through Elanga. The first leg at St. James' Park last week ended all square, with Harvey Barnes' goal cancelled out by Lamine Yamal's late, late penalty, meaning the clash in Catalonia is finely balanced. But their performance on Tyneside, which was followed by a fine away win at Chelsea in the Premier League at the weekend, sees Eddie Howe go into the game with a positive mindset.

Although born in Wembley, London, Murphy and his twin brother, Josh, grew up as Magpies supporters. Recently, the 31-year-old made his 250th appearance for the club, having signed from Norwich City in 2017, but it hasn't been a smooth path. He had loan spells at West Bromwich Albion and Sheffield Wednesday as he initially struggled to establish himself at St. James' Park, but has become increasingly influential on and off the pitch under Eddie Howe.
Newcastle United 1 Barcelona 1
Eddie Howe had described this as the biggest match in the club's recent history and they almost pulled off one of their best ever results. Now progress to the quarter-finals rests on next week's second leg, and therefore perhaps that game in Spain warrants similar billing. "We have to believe we're very much in the tie," said Howe after the game.

The ten-goal forward has been unwell in recent days, so William Osula will lead the line against the La Liga leaders. Sven Botman, Joe Willock and Nick Woltemade drop down the the bench. Tino Livramento is again on the bench after making his return from injury towards the end of the City cup tie.

In a crazy ending to the first half, Anthony Gordon's penalty put Newcastle in front shortly after Jacob Ramsey had been dismissed, and Casemiro levelled with virtually the last kick before the break. The second half was far shorter on incident but that owed much to the way Eddie Howe's players dug in to limit opportunities for the in-form visitors - and the performance of Aaron Ramsdale on the occasions when they did break through.

Twice Eddie Howe's men went behind at St. James' Park - to Jarrad Branthwaite's 19th minute opener then Beto's close range finish - but twice the black and whites came back, through Jacob Ramsey's second goal of the season and Murphy's effort. But within a minute of Murphy's goal, Thierno Barry bundled the ball over the line to win the game for the Everton - with Jordan Pickford's stunning save from Sandro Tonali's thumping volley in the dying seconds capping off a frustrating day.
Newcastle United 3 Qarabağ 2 (9-3 on aggregate) | NUFC
"It's a massive achievement from us to get to the last 16," said Eddie Howe after this 9-3 aggregate victory. "Nothing was given to us at the start of this Champions League run. We've really enjoyed it, and then coming to the pressure game, the double-header, I think we've navigated that really well. "I don't care who you play at this stage, it's a tough draw, and we did the majority of the work in the away game.

Harvey Barnes let fly inside three minutes but his effort was narrowly wide, then Sandro Tonali was off target from a free kick after Lewis Hall was fouled on the edge of the penalty area. In the 15th minute, a Tonali corner was punched away by Caoimhin Kelleher as far as Jacob Murphy. His low drive was flicked goalwards by Barnes, but it went the wrong side of the post. Then Mathias Jensen took advantage of a loose Murphy pass to stride towards the United box but Nick Pope held his 20-yard strike.

The Magpies have been the better team against the reigning Premier League champions as they look to build on their midweek showing in the Champions League, and had already come the closest to scoring through Harvey Barnes. That was before Gordon struck at the Kop end to give his side a deserved lead - but Ekitike soon levelled. Liverpool created the first real opening in the 17th minute when Ekitike turned and let fly from outside the box, but Nick Pope got down to his right to hold.

The Magpies knew that three points against their third-placed visitors could be enough to take them into the top four, but instead it was Villa who maintained their title challenge with a first victory on Tyneside in more than two decades. Sandro Tonali almost opened the scoring inside the first minute as he jinked into the box but Martínez spread himself to block the Italian's shot and deny him what would have been a wonderful solo strike.

Yoane Wissa replaced Nick Woltemade in the only change to the side which drew at Wolves at the weekend, and on what was his full Champions League debut, he gave his side the lead, finishing coolly at the Leazes End after eight minutes. There was a VAR check, with German referee Daniel Siebert going over to the pitchside monitor, but the goal stood. It was his third for United and his first in the Champions League.
Confirmed line up: Wissa returns for PSV fixture
He replaces Nick Woltemade in the only change to the side which drew at Wolves at the weekend. It's the summer signing from Brentford's full Champions League debut - he was a late substitute in December's 2-2 draw with Bayer Leverkusen. Woltemade is on the bench, with two goalkeepers among the substitutes as Max Thompson is included in the squad as well as Aaron Ramsdale. Anthony Gordon will look to add to his five goals in the competition so far this term, with Harvey Barnes one behind with four.

Anthony Gordon spread play to Jacob Murphy on the right and the long-serving winger slid the ball in first time to Wissa.

There were seven changes to the Newcastle United starting line-up following Wednesday night's Premier League win over Leeds. Matchwinner Harvey Barnes was one of the four players to keep their place, with Malick Thiaw and Sandro Tonali - both withdrawn at half time on Wednesday night - and Nick Woltemade the others.
Lewis Hall: 'You create your own luck'
England international Hall was arguably the Magpies' outstanding performer on a disappointing night and hit the underside of the crossbar with a fierce drive as Eddie Howe's men pushed for an equaliser after going behind to Patrick Dorgu's spectacular 24th-minute strike. Newcastle saw other opportunities go begging, and had strong appeals for a penalty when Lisandro Martinez handled the ball inside his area.
'The fans gave me the confidence,' says two-goal Nick Woltemade
The Germany international's first-half double put the Magpies two goals ahead at St. James' Park, before Reece James and João Pedro responded for the Club World Cup holders. But Woltemade saw plenty of positives in Newcastle's performance, while his brace was a welcome boost after his unfortunate own goal at the Stadium of Light six days earlier. Here are some of his post-match thoughts: On the result and performance...
Newcastle United 1 Fulham 1
Wissa made his full debut for the Magpies in the Carabao Cup quarter-final tie and opened the scoring in the 11th minute. Fabian Schär's crossfield ball to Jacob Murphy allowed the winger to drill the ball into the box from the right, and although goalkeeper Benjamin Lecomte pushed it out, Wissa gambled and fired home at the Leazes End. But Fulham quickly levelled when Saša Lukić stole in unmarked to head beyond Aaron Ramsdale.
Confirmed line-up: Six changes for Fulham quarter-final clash

Michael Mills was also on target twice in an impressive showing from Chris Moore's side, who will now face Crystal Palace in the next round as they look to win the tournament for the first time since a Paul Gascoigne-inspired team lifted the trophy in 1985. Team news: Botman back for Blues battle
The Dutch defender underwent surgery on a knee problem in March but, having made appearances from the bench in each of the Magpies' last two games, comes into the starting XI to face the Blues. Anthony Gordon is also in from the start, with Kieran Trippier and Joe Willock coming out of the team which drew at Brighton last weekend. Trippier misses out with a calf injury while Willock has a knee complaint, although both are minor. Meanwhile, Jamaal Lascelles is named among the substitutes.
Team news: United unchanged for sixth game in succession
Jason Tindall continues to take the team as Eddie Howe recovers from pneumonia, but the assistant manager has opted to stick with the same starting XI which has picked up 12 points from the last four league games either side of winning the Carabao Cup last month. Joe Willock does, however, return to the bench after following concussion protocols. He replaces Sean Neave among the substitutes.

England under-18 international Neave scored less than two minutes into his PL2 debut against Leeds United's under-21s in November last year, having netted 13 goals across all competitions for the Magpies' under-18 side last term. The former Thorp Academy pupil and Wallsend Boys Club junior made his second-string debut in an EFL Trophy clash against League Two Crewe Alexandra in November 2023 and has seven goals in nine appearances at Academy level this season.
