LAKE FOREST — Jordan Howard found no room to run and Tarik Cohen was more of an invisible man than a flashy playmaker for the Chicago Bears. The inability to get the run game going was a huge factor in last week's disappointing loss to Green Bay. And it's something the Bears hope to correct when they host the Detroit Lions on Sunday."I think it's executing better," coach John Fox said Wednesday. "You know, I think it was apparent that we struggled a little bit in that area.

Below the Waterline: Targeting poachers is everyone's duty
I have very few things in the outdoors that truly aggravate me. It is the place I escape aggravation and even the worst days in the outdoors are better to me than sitting in my best chair, fiddling with things in my shop (I love that too), or watching TV.It is inherently esoteric and random, plus you never know where those outdoor experiences will land you. It can start with a plan but end up entirely different.

Below the Waterline: Colder weather, lake turnover can key bigger bites
Cold weather, especially cold nights, change everything for our fisheries. That doesn’t mean fish won’t bite or be shallow, but they can indeed be fickle creatures to pattern this time of year.As we get nighttime temperatures into the 30s, the mix of warm water near the surface cools rapidly and settles as cooler water to the bottom. The epilimnion, top layer, turns over to the hypolimnion, bottom layer, and the upper layer becomes denser and sinks.

Below the Waterline: Fishing needs to separate true pros from wannabes
Do you believe credentials are important? Does where you have been, what chairs you have sat in, your education and past experience play a role in the future? When do credentials matter and when are they less important? If I am having complicated surgery, have a legal problem or am wanting my car fixed correctly, I want someone with credentials doing the job.

Illini coaches seek growth from young players
CHAMPAIGN — Hardy Nickerson said the frustration level he felt Saturday as the University of Illinois defensive coordinator was nearly unbearable. As Minnesota effectively and repeatedly ran the same play, and with Nickerson’s defense seemingly helpless to stop it, the 16-year NFL veteran linebacker said it was all he could do not to run onto the field and stop it himself. Garrick McGee, Illinois’ offensive coordinator, knows the feeling of exasperation, too.

Below the Waterline: Proper planning needed to enhance our outdoor jewels
Finding new friends in the outdoors is easy. They are everywhere. Walking with your head up, smiling and just being outdoors helping and speaking to folks allow it to be so. The outdoors brings out the best in people.I recently had the opportunity to meet a man and his wife at the White Oak ramp at Evergreen Lake that showcases that very point.
ISU moving on from first loss of season
NORMAL – In a “looking at the bright side” moment Tuesday, Brock Spack said Saturday’s 37-16 loss to Northern Arizona served as a subtle but encouraging reminder of how far the Illinois State program has progressed since he became head coach in 2009.“As opposed to when I got here, when we lose everybody is stunned,” Spack said. “I go to church and no one knows how to talk to me. They don’t know if they want to say ‘hi’ because I probably don’t have a really good look on my face.

Offensive struggles crop up for Redbirds
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Even dating back to a Sept. 30 victory over Indiana State, two disturbing trends have surfaced for the Illinois State football team's offense. The culprits, which also played a large part in Saturday's 37-16 loss to Northern Arizona, are third down inefficiency and an inability to finish drives with points. Below the Waterline: 'Fun factor' a key to reviving clubs
When I started bass fishing in the late 1970s, bass clubs were the rage. In my small town in Illinois we had 10 or more and they were the lifeblood to the fishing industry. Clubs flourished for a variety of reasons. They fished, but more importantly got involved with civic and conservation projects. They also taught fishing.
