Books I Read in 2023
1. No One Left to Come Looking for You by Sam Lipsyte Funny novel set in the East Village of the early ’90s. Could have done without the mention of Trump, however; totally took me out of the story for a few pages. Decent history of the movies, but I prefer reading Pauline Kael, Susan Sontag, and Roger Ebert, among others. 4.

What'll I do, when drink is tempting me, to ruin me, what'll I do?
Changed words to the tune of the Birds of a Feather TV programme titles? Yup, sorry couldn't resist the chance to rhyme though. So, what do we do? Admittedly right now I often give in! I'm determined I won't be writing after a drink for much longer though. I will be giving up even sooner than planned as my blood results were not great today and that gave me a scare! I have several markers in the blood that doctors recognise as showing up in heavy drinkers.

Whilst I am reading a book about a man that seems haunted by ravens/ crows/ half man-half Raven: 'The Raven & The Crow: A Tale of Crime and Folklore Set in a Remote English Village' by Guy Sheppard, something comes to me... It feels far away yet right beside me. Maybe even inside of me. It freaks me out slightly as I love the book so far and have a love for Corvids myself! I can't place what 'it' is however. I feel like it might be my Mum, but then I think that's wishful thinking.
Whilst I am reading a book about a man that seems haunted by ravens/ crows/ half man-half Raven...
I feel like it might be my mum but then I think that's wishful thinking. Then I feel maybe it is her. Arms folded and understanding yet annoyance on her face as I sit here and drink too much wine and smoke. She died of a cancer 20 years ago, which could be related to smoking. when she was younger and/ or drinking.

The soldiers who resisted the first Gulf War deserve recognition
Embed from Getty Images International Conscientious Objectors’ Day is observed annually on May 15. Thirty years ago this month, at the conclusion of the first Gulf War, Private First Class Sam Lwin and 24 other Marines were charged with desertion. They were among tens of thousands across the U.S. armed forces who applied for conscientious objector, or CO, status or otherwise resisted participation in a war that they came to realize was wrong.
Early opposition to the atomic bomb came from Black America - War Resisters
Content warning: violence, racist language, mention of racist atrocities, mass death We solemnly recognize August 6 as the 75th anniversary of the U.S. atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Japan — the first time atomic weapons were used in war. Estimating the number of casualties is difficult, and it is possible that our estimates are over-conservative, but early attempts place the figure at 70,000 dead by the end of 1945. More recent reevaluations estimate at least 140,000 people lost their lives.
Recovery of Rare Earth Elements from Geothermal Fluids through Bacterial Cell Surface Adsorption
The increasing demand for rare earth elements (REEs) in the modern economy motivates the development of novel strategies for cost-effective REE recovery from nontraditional feedstocks. We previously engineered E. coli to express lanthanide binding tags on the cell surface, which increased the REE biosorption capacity and selectivity. Here we examined how REE adsorption by the engineered E.
Your Foolproof Guide to Treating and Preventing the Flu
Cover your mouth, disinfect your hands, and hide your children! The flu season has begun. While the ubiquitous (and perhaps dreaded) flu shot is the best way to prevent getting sick, no one is completely immune. So it’s important for everyone to be well-informed and ready to fight off the plague. The sickness we all know by one term—“the flu”— can actually be caused by a number of different virus strains, each with their own specific traits.
The Least Disgusting Way to Use a Public Toilet, According to Experts
Picture this: You’re in a public restroom. You carefully lay down a strip of toilet paper, forming a protective shield between you and all the germs of the world. You’re a centimeter from sitting down... when the paper slips into the bowl. Blergh, right? Well, there's good and bad news. First, the good: Public toilet seats are actually one of the cleanest places in the entire restroom. The bad news: Everything else can be pretty nasty.
Here's What Really Happens When You Wear High Heels
If you've ever worn stillettos, you know how painful they can be. Even though it's trendy to opt for more comfortable footwear these days (thanks athleisure movement!)—we still wear heels, whether on special occasions or every day because it's company dress code (yes, even in 2016!).
