The Alaska LNG project is a generational opportunity we cannot miss
There are moments in Alaska’s history when the future of our state came into sharp focus. Statehood was one. The Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) was another. The Trans-Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS) was certainly one of the most consequential. But before each became reality, Alaskans were told the same thing: It’s too hard. It’s too complicated. It will never happen. Time and again, Alaskans proved the skeptics wrong.
Opinion: Working together to end the cycle of violence against Alaska Native women
Posters line a podium at an event marking Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons Day in Albuquerque, N.M., on May 5, 2024. Families and advocates around the country have worked to draw attention to the disproportionate number of Indigenous people who have been victims of violence.
Opinion: The cost of waiting on Alaska LNG is already showing up
Downtown Anchorage, Alaska, is dwarfed by the snowy Chugach Mountains and fronted by an ice-choked Cook Inlet on Monday, March 11, 2024. (AP Photo/Mark Thiessen) As former mayors of Anchorage, we each had the responsibility of leading Alaska’s largest city through moments of challenge and opportunity. While our administrations differed in time and approach, one priority remained constant: ensuring that Anchorage and Alaska have access to reliable, affordable energy.

Securing historic $1.4 billion for generational opportunity to transform health care in Alaska
Happy New Year, Alaska! As we look to 2026, we have challenges, but we also have enormous opportunities, many of which we’ve been pursuing for decades: an oil production boom on state and federal lands; historic progress on the gasline; bringing icebreakers to our state; billions of dollars of military, Coast Guard, and infrastructure investments; and major tax cuts for working families and our seniors who’ve worked so hard to build our state.

How are genomics relevant to the protection market?
"Genomic data, privacy, and consent must be carefully managed and understood by anyone who takes part in genomic-based healthcare." It has long been known that the most efficient way to treat a health condition is to prevent it from occurring in the first place. While prevention isn’t always possible, there’s plenty we can do to reduce our chances of developing cancers, heart disease, or type 2 diabetes. Until recently, preventative action has tended to err on the side of ‘one size fits all’.

OP-ED: Seizing opportunities for Alaska with the Trump administration
I recently delivered my annual address to the Legislature in Juneau. I spoke about the success we’ve had in continuing our military build-up, including the possibility of re-opening the U.S. Navy base in Adak, to counter the unprecedented number of Russian and Chinese incursions near our air and waters. I spoke about our veterans and how we’re continuing to work to make sure they get the benefits they have earned.

OPINION: We’re working to find the causes of Yukon salmon declines
In the Washington Post piece republished in the Anchorage Daily News, “There’s a crisis in the Yukon River,” the authors correctly wrote about the devastation caused by the crash of salmon on the Yukon and other rivers in Alaska. The piece notes the spiritual and cultural loss that many predominantly Alaska Native communities are experiencing as a result of these salmon crashes.
OPINION: Celebrating Ted Stevens’ 100th birthday
On Nov. 18, 1923 — 100 years ago — Theodore Fulton “Ted” Stevens was born, marking the start of an extraordinary life defined by service to our nation and accomplishment for Alaska. That service began during World War II, when Ted enlisted in the Army Air Corps as a pilot. He supported General Chenault’s “Flying Tigers” in the China-Burma-India Theater, flying C-46s and C-47s on missions “over the Hump” behind enemy lines.
