The law creates the possibility of additional one-time education funding if state revenues exceed a specified threshold. This reflects a shared commitment to Alaska’s students, educators and families. But we’d like to ask for one more thing: timely information.

Republicans are so out of touch with reality. The names are similar, not identical. At least Dan J. has been in Alaska for a while, unlike Ohio Dan. So they got another Republican to say he can’t run. They will do and say anything to get their way. How many people, out of 350 million nationally, have the same or similar names? This is BS. Anyone who’s spent even a little time around Alaska politics knows a Senate race won’t be polite or gentle. Campaigns get tough. Candidates take shots at each other, challenge each other’s records, question motives and leave voters to make sense of it all. That’s just how politics works. But there’s a clear difference between tough campaigning and misleading voters. A campaign can be aggressive without trying to confuse people about who is really asking for their vote. That’s why the case of Dan J.

For most Alaskans, the June North Pacific Fishery Management Council meeting didn’t make the news. For communities along the Yukon River, it should have. The council has been weighing performance standards for pelagic trawl gear, nets used in the Bering Sea pollock fishery that catch chinook and chum salmon bound for Western and Interior Alaska rivers. The question: enforceable standards or voluntary ones? Industry wants them to be voluntary.

I’ve been saying this for years: “Partisan politics has poisoned and polluted the political process to the point of paralysis.” If it looks phony, acts phony and stinks phony, it’s most likely phony. This play with two “Dan Sullivans” is a ploy that has me holding my nose. Most people fail to realize that a candidate is little more than a titular head for a political party. It is the party that runs the candidate, not the candidate who runs the party.

A man was fatally shot by law enforcement officers near a Fairbanks shopping center Sunday evening, Fairbanks police say. The shooting took place just after 6 p.m. in the parking lot of the Bentley Mall, according to a statement from the Fairbanks Police Department. Two officers from the department, as well as one Alaska State Trooper, fired their weapons, both agencies said. The man, described as a suspect, was taken to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital, where he later died, Fairbanks police said.
