How to retain customers in a subscription business
By Dan Ziv, TouchNote CEO As the ability to shop in physical stores was restricted over lockdown there was a boom in ecommerce, and especially in subscriptions. Consumers subscribed to food, entertainment and other ways of procuring and spreading joy to the point that in March 2021, one in five UK consumers had signed up to a subscription service that delivered goods to their door. Total retail subscriptions rose by a staggering 50% in lockdown, a main catalyst being to alleviate loneliness.

KINDNESS AND THE BOOM OF THE SUBSCRIPTION ECONOMY
By Geoff Bibby, CMO, Zix As someone who’s spent more than two decades in email and internet security, nearly 18 of which have been spent at the same company, I’ve had a unique and privileged view of how much the space has evolved. Even among the sweeping changes that have occurred, however, there are clear cyclical patterns, meaning that many of the challenges we face today are similar to those we faced in the past. That’s not to diminish the nature of the changes that have taken place.

GUEST COMMENT A reckoning is coming for the e-commerce sector, how to be on the right side
Ecommerce is hot at the moment and valuations are going through the roof on the back of the Moonpig IPO, we can expect more big fund raises to follow this year. That’s not to suggest investors will take out their check book for just anyone though. Long-term, there simply isn’t enough capacity in the market to sustain so many businesses chasing the same consumers. 2019 was a black year for bricks and mortar and by the same token, we can expect a similar cull in the online space in the near future.
EDITORIAL How shoppers restyle ecommerce as omni-channel
Mobile and on the move: the new world of omni-channel (Image: AdobeStock) News that Sainsbury’s has seen profits drop 39% masks the fact that it, like so many other retailers, has seen a surge in online sales. It, for one, saw online rise from 8 to 17% of total sales over 2020 and its revamp of Argos and Habitat has been driven, in no small part, by thrusting uptake of online in lockdown.

Humanitarian crisis aside, the FTSE dropped 14.3% in 2020, sinking to depths seen last in the 2008 financial crash. So how have we as a society changed? And what have we learnt? The answer might not be quite as bleak as you’d think. As consumers in the pandemic, we turned largely to online and subscription services to stay entertained and connected.
