Increases in National Insurance Contributions (NIC) and other government policies have contributed to costs increasing by 70% for an average company over the last 10 years. A typical 50-person, £5 million turnover business now has £827,000 more costs than in 2016, according to data from the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC). Around 27% of the decade’s total increases landed in the past two years.
Big businesses pay suppliers on time less than 15% of the time
The UK’s largest companies pay supplier invoices by the day payment is due on fewer than one in seven occasions, new research reveals. Businesses employing more than 1,000 people paid suppliers on time just 15% of the time in March 2026, compared to 66% of smaller businesses. Overall, only 61% of UK firms paid suppliers on time, according to the report by Dun & Bradstreet.
436,000 of the 864,000 people affected by Making Tax Digital for Income Tax met the first quarterly update deadline
Under half of the 864,000 sole traders and landlords impacted by the new Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax system submitted their first update to HM Revenue & Customs by the 7 August deadline. Official figures from HMRC showed that 436,000 people sent details about their income and expenses by the required date. Sole traders and landlords with an income of over £50,000 must submit a quarterly update using software.

There was a 31% increase last year in the number of businesses HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) tried to shut down for failing to pay their taxes. The tax authority applied to close 4,761 firms due to unpaid tax debts, up from from 3,625 in 2024, according toaccountancy group UHY Hacker Young. The increase came as the tax authority stepped up efforts to recover billions in outstanding tax liabilities.
Fall in number of scale-ups in the UK
The number of scale-up businesses in the UK has declined for the second year in a row. There were 128,760 scale-ups in 2025, down from a peak of 129,080 in 2023, according to analysis of Office for National Statistics data by Vestd. It’s the second annual decrease in a row. In 2024, there were 128,960 scale-ups, which are defined as firms with between 20 and 249 employees that have moved beyond early-stage growth and are actively scaling their operations.

A consortium of some of the UK’s largest pension providers are exploring the creation of a £1 billion fund to invest in scaling businesses.
