FIRST PERSON: Why the Great Commission still matters for the church
Photo via Unsplash. After Jesus rose from the dead, He appeared to His disciples and said, to them: “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:18–20).
‘We just pray about everything,’ Texas pastor says
EL PASO, Texas – Cielo Vista Church is in the middle of a summer season that is recognizable to most large Southern Baptist churches. The summer will include an evangelistic vacation Bible school, student camps and mission trips to Cambodia and the Philippines. The church’s weekly calendar is full of ministries including men’s and women’s Bible studies in Spanish and English, Celebrate Recovery and collegiate gatherings.
Crossover is an annual tradition for this Illinois family
ORLANDO – Why would an Illinois family of 10 make an almost 1,000-mile journey from their home in Casey, Ill., to Central Florida (or some other distant location) every year? For the Howards, the reason is simple: to share the Gospel. This family has traveled every June since 2019 to take part in Crossover, the annual evangelism outreach in and around the host city for the Southern Baptist Convention. Their first outreach together was in Birmingham.
FIRST PERSON: Why the Great Commission still matters for the Church
Editor’s note: The following is an excerpt from “I Am Going, second edition” by Daniel L. Akin, released by B&H Publishing (June 2026).
Better Together: Lifeway looks to help churches, pastors flourish
NASHVILLE (BP) – It may surprise Southern Baptists to learn that Lifeway’s new president went to maximum-security prison at 15 years old. Ryan Blackwell wasn’t on the wrong side of the law, though he was there as a matter of conviction. Blackwell had become a Christian two years earlier, and the trip to the prison with his youth pastor was one of several ministry opportunities he received early in his faith walk. On the way to the prison, Blackwell learned he was going to preach.
Tennessee church equipping the called with internship program
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Marcos Crespo spent years pushing a calling to ministry to the back of his mind. Eventually a decade passed between the moment he first sensed God’s direction and the day he finally said yes. “My ministry calling continued to increase,” Crespo said.
Hometown upbringing, ministry background guide new St. Louis Metro associational leader
FERGUSON, Mo. (BP) – Michael T. Byrd, Sr.’s background in ministry began as a 19-year-old preacher before moving into the pastorate and associational work, all in his native St. Louis. It’s that experience he’s eager to put into practice as the new executive director of the St. Louis Metro Baptist Association. He told Baptist Press that it starts with ensuring pastors have a voice. “Our association exists to serve our churches. But the pastor speaks for his church,” he said.
Caught between dimensions: 2D versus 3D geometric morphometrics in biodiversity assessment
1 INTRODUCTION Body shape and size are fundamental features of organismal design and biodiversity, governing essential ecophysiological functions related to locomotion, feeding, reproduction, and life history (Adams & Collyer, 2009; Albert & Johnson, 2012; Klingenberg, 2016; Radinsky, 2015; Wainwright et al., 1982).
2023 SBC Annual now available, the place ‘to see who Southern Baptists are’
NASHVILLE (BP) – The 2023 Annual of the Southern Baptist Convention is both a snapshot of the current moment in Southern Baptist life and a story about the past and the future of Southern Baptist work, said SBC Recording Secretary Nathan Finn, who’s fairly new to the job. The 564-page annual – a record of the proceedings and reports from the 2023 SBC Annual Meeting in New Orleans – is now available in hard copy and in a searchable online format at sbc.net.
10 reasons some folks didn't listen to your preaching or teaching this weekend
Metadata: Topic(s): Churches and MinistryFormat(s): Text Articles Share this post: We who preach or teach are kidding ourselves if we believe everyone is listening to us when we speak. Somebody’s not listening (and, if weren’t honest, we can identify some of those folks by just watching them while we’re speaking). Here are some of the reasons folks weren’t listening this past weekend: Distraction. Something else was going on in their head—like worries, concerns, exciting plans, or even lunch.
FIRST-PERSON: Why theology and missions should be integrated | Baptist Press
Metadata: Series: First PersonTopic(s): Missions, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, Theology & DoctrineFormat(s): Text Articles Share this post: Editor’s note: Daniel Akin is president of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, N.C. Missions and theology are meant to be kept together because the Bible never separates them. The testimony of Scripture is that biblical theology fuels missions and biblical missions fuels theology.
Building a Theological Library (2013 Update)
Dr. Akin has recently released an updated version of Building a Theological Library. This version includes classics in the various categories that any good library needs, as well as a good selection of some recent books that pastors and students of theology would do well to consult. This year’s edition also includes new categories such as “Biography” and “Prayer.” Building a Theological Library (2013 Update)
Is Jesus Christ Forever Human?
Is Jesus Christ forever human? Yes, he is! The Bible says that there is one mediator between God and man - the man, Christ Jesus. There was never a time when the Son was not; there was a time when Jesus was not.
Why Preach Expositionally?: To Communicate the Theology of the Text
I have already offered three reasons for why we should preach expositionally (here, here, and here). Next I’d like to expand on those answers by adding another reason I think pastors ought to make expository sermons their regular practice in the pulpit. Truth and Theology A fourth reason to preach expository sermons is because a historical-grammatical-theological interpretation will best discover both the truth of the text and the theology of the text.

It seems right today to talk about the Southern Baptist Convention that met last week in New Orleans, Louisiana. The reason I did not speak about the issues leading up to the convention is because I had a designated role in one of the controversial issues that hit the floor of the Southern Baptist Convention and I did not believe it was ethically right for me to have that discussion before the Southern Baptist Convention until I made those arguments at the Southern Baptist Convention.
How Should Christians View the End Times?
I think Titus got it right when he said, "We look for the blessed hope and the glorious appearing of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ." I believe the Bible teaches that just as he physically, bodily, historically ascended into heaven in Acts 1, he will also bodily, literally, historically come again.

As I said, I've been working on this issue for a very long time. Indeed, since the publication of my book, We Cannot Be Silent dealing with these issues and the revolution. The revolution's speeding up on this issue and that's what we need to note. But I have been building a file.
Hope for Roe reversal greets Sanctity of Life Sunday
Editor’s note: Sunday (Jan. 16) is Sanctity of Human Life Sunday in the Southern Baptist Convention. Resources for churches are available here. NASHVILLE (BP) – Many Southern Baptists will observe Sanctity of Human Life Sunday this year in their churches with the hope the court decision that legalized abortion nationwide may be only months away from its demise. The 37th annual observance of Sanctity of Human Life Sunday on the Southern Baptist Convention calendar will be Jan. 16.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (BP) – More than 1,000 leaders from SBC churches in the Midwest are registered for a leadership gathering in Illinois next week. The Midwest Leadership Summit convenes in Springfield Jan. 18-20, bringing together representatives from 12 states and nine Baptist state conventions. “Southern Baptist churches in the North have unique challenges and opportunities,” said Nate Adams, executive director of the Illinois Baptist State Association and one of the organizers of the event.
Florida lawmakers file pre-viability abortion ban bills
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (BP) – Florida legislators filed two bills Tuesday (Jan. 11) to ban abortion pre-viability, making it the latest state to try to limit the procedure as the U.S. Supreme Court rethinks abortion law. Florida House Bill 167 would outlaw abortion when a fetal heartbeat is detected, widely interpreted as six weeks of pregnancy. Florida House Bill 5 would limit abortions at 15 weeks, according to the bills detailed at myfloridahouse.gov.
FIRST-PERSON: Grateful for my Baptist brothers and sisters
WAKE FOREST, N.C. (BP) – God called me into full-time Christian service on a mission trip in 1977. Our church in Forest Park, Ga., had commissioned a team to travel to Sells, Ariz., in partnership with our Home Mission Board (HMB), now the North American Mission Board (NAMB), to do Vacation Bible School, Backyard Bible Clubs, and a revival on the Indian Reservation of the Tohono O’odham Indians.
