Staff roundtable: The Michigan controversies that still haunt us
We are closing out controversies week here at Maize n Brew and our staff has chimed in with some of the moments that have haunted them since they occurred. Many of us are of the younger variety, so I’m sure you will notice a bit of a recent flair to the submissions. Without further ado, here we go: Anthony Broome At this point, it feels like beating a dead horse, but “The Spot” will be burned into my retinas until my last breath.
Roundtable: Varying opinions on where the Jim Harbaugh era is and what comes next
Alright gentlemen, Here we are, Notre Dame week, but it follows another Michigan loss on the big stage on the road. Jim Harbaugh’s bunch fell to Penn State 28-21 last weekend. The fanbase’s mood has been in a lot of ways very positive in the wake of last Saturday. It’s almost like we’re celebrating the moral victory of not getting throttled by the Nittany Lions, the same team that Michigan humiliated in Ann Arbor nearly a year ago.
The Maize n Brew staff’s Composite All-Big Ten Preseason Football Team
College Football is not as far away as you think, meaning its time to get our minds right and prepare for the upcoming season. The Maize n Brew staff got together over the last few weeks to vote on our All-Big Ten team ahead of the 2019 campaign and below is how it all wound up shaking out.
Michigan Baseball Defeats Florida State 2-0 in Omaha
The Michigan Wolverines knocked off the Florida State Seminoles Monday night by a score of 2-0 in Omaha. Starting things off in the top of the first: after Jordan Nwogu grounded out to third, Jesse Franklin launched the first pitch he saw over the right field fence to give Michigan the early lead once again. The lefty Tommy Henry, the only player to beat UCLA twice this season, took the mound for the Wolverines and pitched himself out of a lead-off double to leave the first unscathed.
Michigan Tops Texas Tech in Game One of College World Series
Michigan opened up in Omaha with a 5-3 victory over the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Jordan Nwogu got things going early. After a single to left and a stolen base, Michigan played a little small ball in getting him home. A one-out sacrifice fly from Jordan Brewer would do the deed and Karl Kauffman got through a drama-free first. Michigan 1-0 Despite an Nwogu double-play with Ako Thomas on first, the Wolverines extended their lead in the third.
Michigan Baseball loses to UCLA in extra innings, elimination game set for Sunday night
The Michigan Wolverines baseball team will have to play a deciding game three Sunday night after failing to close out the UCLA Bruins, falling 5-4 in extra innings. Jeff Criswell got the start after closing out game one and pitched admirably. Throwing 95 pitches in 5.2 innings, Criswell left in the sixth with runners on first and second. He found himself pitching out of trouble too often, but it’s worth noting he left the game with the lead.
Roundtable Reaction to John Beilein’s Departure
Dan Allweiss: So, um, I don’t think anyone expected to wake up to the news that John Beilein is heading to Cleveland to coach the post-LeBron cavs, right? This is about as left field as left field comes. David Noe: It’s been an unreal ride the last 12 years. I don’t think anyone thought he’d accomplish what he did, especially over the last few years. My initial reaction is mixed, knowing how much he meant to the program.
Michigan vs. Maryland Game Hub: Preview and How to Watch
A couple weeks ago, Michigan comfortably defeated Maryland in a game where the Wolverines mostly kept the Terrapins at arm’s length after a blistering 21-6 start. The Terps cut the lead to three mid way through the second half, but Michigan would go on a 23-13 run to close out the game. Charles Matthews, Ignas Brazdeikis, and Zavier Simpson all scored in double digits while Jon Teske, Jordan Poole, and Isaiah Livers chipped in eight, nine, and seven points respectively.
Michigan vs. Indiana: Preview, Game Thread and How to Watch
Michigan heads to Bloomington coming off arguably its two worst games of the year. Luckily for the Wolverines, Indiana has been playing even worse, losers of five straight - a streak that started with a loss in Ann Arbor. Going into last week’s tilt against Wisconsin, at least two of Michigan’s leading trio of Ignas Brazdeikis, Jordan Poole, and Charles Matthews had reached double digits scoring in the same game in all but one contest.
Inside the Numbers: Michigan basketball’s Big 3
Earlier this year, let’s say about five or six games ago, I presented the idea in our staff-wide Slack. Michigan was still undefeated but had been relying on big second-half efforts to provide breathing room. Those games followed a general pattern: Michigan would get out to an early lead behind the efforts of either Jordan Poole, Ignas Brazdeikis, or Charles Matthews. In the second half, the Wolverines would pull away as another of the aforementioned three would finally find their stroke.
Michigan vs Illinois: Preview, How to Watch, and Game Thread
And then there were two. After Houston’s upset loss against Temple, the Wolverines are one of two undefeated teams left in the country next to Virginia. They’re also the only the one to never lose to a 16-seed in the NCAA tournament. Michigan travels to Champaign tonight for another conference bout against the Illinois Fighting Illini.
MMQB: “Bo Ball” is Officially Dead
To give everyone a look behind the curtain here, I want to explain how I usually write this column. The moment I get to my computer after the game, I lay out my immediate stream of consciousness. I rarely use those thoughts directly, but they’ll create the framework from which I eventually turn into MMQB. I’ll pull some things from our group chat and Twitter and Reddit, but generally the main couple points come from my post-game word vomit.
THE GAME thread: No. 4 Michigan @ No. 10 Ohio State
If you haven’t watched Luke D’Mello’s hype video for this week, please go ahead and do so. It’s subtle, but it’s some of his best work. Today’s game, the Revenge Tour’s encore, means the world. Win and you play for a Big Ten title controlling your destiny for the College Football Playoff. Lose and you play in a New Year’s Six bowl that no one reeaaallllly cares about. GAME INFO Teams: No. 4 Michigan Wolverines (10-1) @ No. 10 Ohio State Buckeyes (10-1) Date: Saturday, Nov.
MMQB: Feelin’ Moody
I feel like my anxiety is still through the roof. Michigan felt in control for most of that game, but after Iowa in 2016, you can’t help but fret. The Wolverines played a pretty solid game and were able to win by double digits. However, they failed to cover the spread and flashed a few things on film Ohio State is going to circle. Let’s go. The Game Michigan’s offense played one of its best games of the year while the defense played one of its worst.
MMQB (Tuesday Addition): Alexa, play Mo Bamba
Despite being a day late due to travel/illness, I told y’all I would never give up an opportunity to use this GIF, and today remains no exception to that rule. Michigan completely undressed Penn State from the first two drives of the game until the half-backups/half-starters gave up a garbage time touchdown with time ticking down. A friend and I were lucky enough to be able to make the trip up this weekend, and to say Ann Arbor was electric would be an all-time understatement.
Maize n brew football roundtable previews schedule home stretch
The Revenge Tour ran over a trash program in the rain, and Michigan has themselves in the driver’s seat to get to both Indianapolis and into the playoff field. The bye week gives us an opportunity to watch some other football without pulling our hair out, and to also recap some of the season up to this point, and spend extra time worrying about Penn State and Ohio State. Fun! With my professional hyper-focus on Michigan, I lose time with my Navy Midshipmen.
Inside the Numbers: Harbaugh era pass/run ratio in big games
To some, Wisconsin represents the archetype for what Michigan football should be: run-centric power-football and 10-win seasons regularly. Well actually, Wisconsin is exactly what Michigan must avoid emulating; a stagnant and unimaginative team that isn’t dynamic enough to beat the elites of the elite. 1980’s football cannot win you titles in 2018, and Wisconsin shows this. Paul Chryst is a great coach, and Wisconsin doesn’t have the resources of the Wolverines.
Monday Morning Quarterbrews: Gameday Awaits
The Wolverines whooped up on Maryland Saturday afternoon to the tune of 42-21, though the game was not nearly that close. The Terrapins struggled at basically everything, but they got a kickoff return for a score and a garbage time touchdown against Michigan backups to close the gap on the scoreboard. We all knew five weeks ago that we’d likely be here: 5-1, high with confidence, yet unproven.
Monday Morning Quarterbrews: Feelin like 2015
That was about as thorough a demolition as you’re going to see. The 2018 Wolverines are starting to feel like the ‘15 bunch, a team that lost an opening week road matchup before going on one of the most dominant five-game stretches in program history. The schedule hasn’t been as tough as ‘15 where the Wolverines pummeled very solid BYU and Northwestern teams, but there’s a similar flavor in the air.
Monday Morning Quarterbrews: Survival
It wasn’t the prettiest game that Michigan has played under Jim Harbaugh, but escaping this week’s chaos with a three-score victory feels significantly better than the alternative. It’ll be interesting the hear the injury updates for this week as Michigan lost quite a bit. Let’s jump in. I think we’re going to do this week in a “the good, the bad, and the ugly” type format because that feels fitting to everything this game was.
Monday Morning Quarterbrews: Glimpses of Greatness
That’s certainly more like it. Waking up Sunday morning is much better with a Michigan W. I’m a huge sports nut, but the only team of mine that can legitimately affect my mood is the Wolverines. A loss will bother me all week, and a win really gets my week started on a high. Let’s get into it I saw what I wanted to see from the Wolverines’ offense. Yes, I would’ve loved more passing attempts, but Shea looked really good when they gave him the opportunities.
5 weeks until kickoff: 5 reasons Michigan will beat Notre Dame
Despite a phenomenal National Title run by the basketball team, this offseason has been brutally long. 2017-18 (we can use that because the team ‘played’ in a New Year’s Day bowl) was not very kind to the Michigan Wolverines. A youthful team made a lot of youthful mistakes and the quarterback situation resembled Michigan State’s offseason. It’s been so bad some have lounged around on hiatus for the last few months waiting for the season to come back...or to regather themselves, who knows?
Report: Kekoa Crawford and Kareem Walker transferring
Earlier this week Jim Harbaugh eluded to the fact that two players are transferring from the football program. Now, a report coming from Toledo sports anchor Jordan Strack has those two players pegged as receiver Kekoa Crawford and running back Kareem Walker. There has been no official confirmation from Michigan, nor from Crawford or Walker yet. If this report is true, Crawford (a would-be Junior in 2018) will finish his Michigan career with 21 receptions, 290 yards, and 2 touchdowns.
Michigan AD Warde Manuel wants Harbaugh and Beilein to be Wolverines for life
Tuesday afternoon, at a meeting of B1G athletic directors, Michigan lead man, Warde Manuel put to rest any potential “hot seat” talk when it comes to Jim Harbaugh. When asked about the future of Harbaugh and basketball coach John Beilein, Manuel responded: I love my coaches across the board, love those two guys in particular.
Opinion: 2018 is Big Ten championship or bust for Michigan now that Shea Patterson is eligible
Shea Patterson is officially eligible and the final piece of the 2018 Wolverine puzzle has been added. Michigan should be the B1G favorite in 2018. They’re adding a former No. 1 overall recruit who loves the University of Michigan and has family ties to the school and area. This site has written extensively about Patterson’s fit covering everything from his backyard tendencies to Harbaugh tweaking the offense by studying the Eagles’ RPOs. That’s not what this is. This is a declaration.
Why I can’t believe Michigan is hiring Jim McElwain
A few of us here at MaizeNBrew.com have emotional connections to other schools. Some grew up fans, others became one after moving, and a few of us have degrees from schools that aren’t Michigan. I belong to those first and final groups. Growing up in Florida, my family was filled with Gators. I now live in Gainesville, attending graduate school after completing my amazing time in Ann Arbor. Don’t get me wrong, my allegiances lie with the Wolverines, but I’m about as up to date on the Florida program.
Let the Past Die, Kill it
Did you know that Michigan lost the Outback Bowl to Will Muschamp and South Carolina? Did you know that Jim Harbaugh is 1-5 against Michigan State and Ohio State? What about this: did you know that Jim Harbaugh has a podcast and the football team took a trip to Rome last year? They met the Pope and gave him Jordans. If you’ve been at all plugged into Michigan football or the sports world in general, there’s a good chance you did already know all of this.
