Letter: Selah needs to rethink comments policy
To the editor — Selah's new policy on public comments is absurd. One part that is peculiar is the section banning repetition of written documents. This policy not only restricts government transparency, it's also been selectively enforced. A quote from the First Amendment was read at the last meeting. The Constitution is a written document. Yet several comments have quoted from official city of Selah documents, obtained via public records request.
Internet of Things market is changing: More but smaller projects to dominate
by Daniel Callahan , Technology Business Research — September 27, 2019 . Editor’s note: Daniel Callahan is an analyst at Technology Business Research. HAMPTON, N.H. – Let us begin with the bad news: Many IT and operational technology (OT) vendors were disappointed — and some incurred damage or had to scramble to realign — as the IoT opportunity failed to live up to inflated expectations prevalent between 2015 and 2017.
IoT is trending toward smaller, easy-to-replicate projects that will generate increased data over time
IoT is not a technology, nor a market, but it certainly drives IT revenue TBR estimates the contribution of the commercial IoT technique to the overall IT market will increase from $456.1 billion in 2019 to $1.7 trillion in 2025, a CAGR of 24.9%. IoT is not a technology or a market, but a technique for applying IT components, made more relevant by the increased ease of connecting sensors and collecting and processing data. It serves as a tool in the larger toolbox of traditional IT solutioning.
IoT is a piece of the larger IT strategy and should not be treated as a unicorn
Let us begin with the bad news: Many IT and operational technology (OT) vendors were disappointed — and some incurred damage or had to scramble to realign — as the IoT opportunity failed to live up to inflated expectations prevalent between 2015 and 2017. Many anticipated far more rapid growth than was reasonable, given that IoT is neither a technology nor a market, but a technique or a class of solutions. Many also thought that version 1.0 of horizontal IoT platforms was a fast and easy sell.

PTC’s innovative outlook, robust solution toolbox, and legacy in CAD and PLM make it a valuable IoT partner
Strategic findings Shift in focus to AR/VR In our 2018 LiveWorx EP we suggested a shift from an emphasis on PTC’s ThingWorx IoT platform to PTC being more vocal about Vuforia, its AR/VR solution, and its wider product portfolio. TBR believes that shift has continued with much of the messaging centered on the business implications of augmented reality as well as how its entire product base works in symphony, and less focus on ThingWorx as its tip of the spear into digital transformation.
Bosch is a things company at heart but will leverage new capabilities to capitalize on emerging data opportunities
Bosch takes off its tie To achieve its current position, Bosch self-admittedly had to transform from a traditional components manufacturer to an evolutionary technology and services company. Bosch CEO Volkmar Denner characterized this transformation as the “taking off of the tie” as the company evolves from a stiffer, traditional mindset to one more like that of Silicon Valley, which focuses on agility, innovation and attracting young talent through corporate flexibility.
In IoT, Oracle means business
“Business first” is the resounding message from Oracle regarding IoT. The company leaps over the technical morass and ecosystem complexities, which often bog down any digital transformation discussion, and instead starts with the business discussion: What is your pain point? Oracle has deep relationships with a wide customer base due to its legacy solutions, including ERP and supply chain management.
Cyber liability insurance: Modern security apparatus for modern security threats
Cyber liability insurance: Leveraging an old concept for modern challenges Despite modern security challenges, there are modern solutions emerging to help customers navigate security risks, reduce risk for enterprises, generate better security hygiene, and perhaps even foster stronger standard bodies. One solution is taking an old concept, insurance, and modifying it for the data age.
Commercial IoT benchmarked revenue increased 14.7% YTY to $11.7B in 4Q18: The prizewinners and dark horses
IoT continues to expand vendor revenue, but it is unlikely to ever contribute to explosive growth Total commercial IoT benchmarked revenue increased 14.7% year-to-year (YTY) to $11.7 billion in 4Q18. IoT is a market that is “too big to miss” and is contributing new revenue for a large set of vendors.
Distributors and VARs: The unsung heroes of the IoT market
The background Commercial IoT has received substantial press over the last three years. It started in 2015 with hyped claims of IoT’s ability to deliver total transformation, but expectations around the technology have matured and IoT is now viewed as a reasonable technique for solving business problems. However, one thing has not changed: When it comes to IoT market participants, the focus of the discussion remains on larger IT vendors, SIs and customers.
The IoT market has begun sorting itself out in 2019 — a vast improvement from its disorganized past | TBR
It has been a wild and chaotic ride for Internet of Things (IoT) vendors, with many placing big bets on IoT in the past and entering 2018 largely disappointed by the results. While IoT will likely never meet the expectations placed on it in 2015 and 2016 — the peak of hype — IoT’s contribution to IT vendor revenue will increase, with IoT ultimately becoming a core revenue driver.
The IoT market continues to stabilize, with the overall market growing at a moderate accelerating CAGR of 24.8%
TBR projects total commercial Internet of Things (IoT) market revenue will increase from $456.1 billion in 2019 to $1.4 trillion in 2024, a CAGR of 24.8%.
It is important to remember that IoT is a technique for applying technology components, not a technology itself, which leads to certain drivers and inhibitors. Because it is a technique, IoT has an unlimited shelf life. Vendors that invest now and solidify their IoT go-to-market strategy will benefit in the long run.
Why I Left
When I was discharged from the army in 1955, I got an MA in philosophy at Georgetown and then moved on to a PhD in philosophy at Harvard, from 1955 to 1961. If I had not noted the secularism of Yale, I could not miss it in the philosophy department at Harvard. That bias was not so much in the courses but more in the institution’s social and cultural life. There were no more than a handful of Catholic students in the philosophy department.
Visions of Eternity | Daniel Callahan
Few problems have so vexed the human spirit over the centuries as those of aging and death. Why are we afflicted with them? Are they forever part of our fate? Is there any way out? Yet hope has never been lost that there might be a way of transcending those seemingly final milestones. While not everyone longs to pass beyond bodily limits, it is for many people a deeply rooted desire.
Voice assistant volume is increasing
A survey conducted by Adobe Analytics found that 32% of U.S. consumers owned a smart speaker in September 2018, compared to 28% in December 2017. The report also projected that near half of the U.S. consumer base could own one by the end of December 2018, supported by Adobe Analytics’ finding that nearly 80% of smart speaker sales occur during the holiday season.
Aging: Drawing a Map for the Future
Abstract I live on a short street in a small town, Hastings‐on‐Hudson, some fifteen miles up the Hudson River from New York City. Over the past decade a number of families have moved in, with about sixteen children among them. More than a bit housebound now because of old age and watching them romping about, I try to imagine what their world will be like when they have reached my present age, some eighty years from now. But I have a problem. I just can’t imagine it.
Signals of consolidation appear in the cloud IoT platform space
Cloud services revenue grew 48.2% year-to-year and increased as a percentage of total benchmarked Internet of Things (IoT) revenue from 12.4% to 15.8% year-to-year in 2Q18. Growth is driven by customers, especially those without deep legacy ties, moving their workloads to the cloud. The public cloud ecosystem is beginning to consolidate, with the top vendors competing on best-in-class tools, partnerships and business-problem-solving messaging.
Increased market clarity drives 16.1% year-to-year growth in commercial IoT revenue
Technology Business Research, Inc.’s (TBR) 2Q18 Commercial IoT Benchmark recorded revenue growth of 16.1% year-to-year, to $10.3 billion, in 2Q18, among the 28 IT and operational technology (OT) vendors we benchmark. The revenue growth is largely a result of continued implementation of Internet of Thing (IoT) and growth of installed IoT solutions.
What's the Definition of Health?
A Curious Reader asks: What’s the definition of health? According to the World Health Organization, health is “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” The apparent fullness of this definition carries a powerful intuitive appeal: A comprehensive definition of health should cover all aspects of life, it would seem.
Colfax story can serve as a navigational aid for peers still caught in the squall
Colfax is an industrial conglomerate with two operating companies under it, ESAB and Howden. ESAB produces equipment and filler metals for most welding and cutting applications, and Howden delivers precision air and gas handling equipment for numerous industrial applications. Both are worldwide industrial suppliers with multiple manufacturing plants and globally distributed support apparatus.
It’s time to stop calling IoT a technology
Yes, we all do it. Every analyst, vendor and customer has referred to Internet of Things (IoT) as a technology. I have done it countless times, and so have my extremely talented and informed peers. However, it’s a misnomer, a shortcut, and a cop out, and if we actually think of IoT as a technology, it’s ultimately harmful to the adoption of IoT.
Predix is looking for a new owner
Reports surfaced on July 30 that General Electric (GE) has contracted an investment bank to auction off the company’s GE Digital unit. When former CEO Jeff Immelt aimed to diversify GE into the software space to take advantage of the synergies between Internet of Things (IoT) and the company’s industrial machinery footprint, GE Digital was created. The unit got some things right.
Telecom operators drill down on IoT opportunity in logistics
Despite the hype to the contrary, in commercial Internet of Things (IoT), not all verticals are created equal in terms of opportunity. There is near-term opportunity in some verticals, while opportunity in other verticals will take a few years to mature. The verticals with the longest and deepest histories of using IoT are oil and gas, utilities, manufacturing (including automotive), and logistics.
Time to get industrial about healthcare
Internet of Things (IoT) hesitation in the healthcare vertical stems from the industry’s complexity, as it is chained by liability and privacy issues, a general unease about change, legacy equipment, and unevolved processes. These complexities are all rooted in real concerns of customers and vendors in the healthcare space.
Smart city solutions have to think outside the trash bin
The “Connecting Your Business to the Smart Cities We All Live In” panel during PTC’s LiveWorx event included ideas consistent with TBR’s previous views on smart cities. One of the most interesting speakers was Nigel Jacob, the co-founder of the Mayor’s Office of New Urban Mechanics, an R&D organization within Boston’s City Hall.
Canonical seeks to solve the IoT software puzzle
Despite Internet of Things (IoT) having become a common term in business transformation vernacular over the last three years, its development is still akin to a self-guided home improvement project — you can find all the pieces at the store, but there are numerous brands per item and no guarantee the pieces will fit together; and you can find an endless number of blueprints online, but you won’t be able to tell which one is best for your situation or which will have the most lasting appeal.
‘Popcorn market’ and ‘shrink-wrapped’ IoT: TBR gets creative with industry terms
Observers of emerging tech trends often seek the “hockey stick” moment, or that period when the market takes off following an explosion of activity. However, as TBR Principal Analyst Ezra Gottheil explains in his special report ‘Shrink-wrapped’ IoT will drive accelerating growth; an explosion of activity, or huge moment of growth, will likely never occur in the overall commercial IoT market.
LiveWorx 2018: Better together with others
In just over three years, the Internet of Things (IoT) has rapidly evolved on a path to maturity. But it still has miles to go. When TBR started closely watching IoT, it was a nebulous set of technologies that promised to radically change a customer’s business. IoT was surrounded by tremendous hype, and just about every company claimed it had the winning solution but lacked substantiated proof.
From “An Alternative Proposal”
Though much has changed in recent years, the attitude of many Catholics toward the papacy is still one of unthinking subservience and obedience. When they are told these days to “follow their conscience” this will be tantamount to telling them to obey the Pope; for that, and only that, is what following their conscience means to them. Very strenuous efforts will be needed to crack this mold.
In battle for world's top PC seller, HP gains at expense of Lenovo, Dell
HAMPTON, N.H. – In calendar 4Q17 HP Inc.’s revenue grew 14% year-to-year to $14.5 billion, marking five consecutive quarters of revenue growth. This growth was the result of improvement across all of its segments, according to data in its most recent earnings report. HP Inc. noted 10%, 13% and 18% growth in the Americas, EMEA and APAC, respectively. Inside its product segments, Personal Systems grew 15% year-to-year to $9.4 billion and Printing expanded 14% year-to-year to $5.1 billion.
How American medicine is destroying itself
Consider that a National Cancer Institute study projects a 39 percent increase in cancer costs between 2010 and 2020. That figure represents in great part our success in extending the lives of those already afflicted with the disease. Kidney dialysis also has become an economic quagmire. A 150 percent increase in the number of such patients is expected over the next decade.
