South Africa’s new astronomers heading to the stars
SPACE SCIENCE Twenty years ago the country had only 40 astrophysicists, all white. Now programmes to foster African talent have paid off, with hundreds qualified. South Africa: 20 Years Ago South Africa Had 40 Qualified Astronomers - All White. How It's Opened Space Science and Developed Skills Since Then
South African astronomy started an important journey two decades ago, when an initiative to attract and train future scientists in the field welcomed its first group of students under the National Astrophysics and Space Science Programme. World class facilities have been established during this period, the most notable of which are the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) and the MeerKAT radio telescope, a precursor to the international Square Kilometre Array.

The National Astrophysics and Space Science Programme has played a vital role in ensuring that these facilities were not simply operated for the benefit of international partners. It has also contributed individuals with crucial data analysis skills to the country’s growing high-tech workforce. As astronomers who were part of this journey – organisers, contributors and beneficiaries – we are using the 20th anniversary date to reflect on the programme’s impact and its significance for the country.
Bagaimana planet-planet terbentuk?
Bagaimana planet-planet terbentuk?
Curious Kids: How are planets created? Original
Curious Kids is a series for children in which we ask experts to answer questions from kids. How are planets created? - (Saba, 6, Kenya) Thanks for asking such an interesting question, Saba. When you talk about planets you’re probably thinking of the planets in our solar system – the ones orbiting (circling around) our sun. There are eight of these . One of them is where you and I live: Earth. The others are Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.
South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) Telescopes Observe The First Successful Redirection Of An Asteroid
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has announced that the orbital period of the asteroid Dimorphos around its parent asteroid Didymos has successfully been altered after it impacted with the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) spacecraft at 1:14 am SAST on 27 September 2022, an event closely followed by astronomers at the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO).
How visionary scientist Bernie Fanaroff put African astronomy on the map
Recent decades have seen remarkable growth in astronomy on the African continent. Africa enjoys pristine dark skies and vast radio quiet zones, making it the ideal home for many advanced telescopes trained on our galaxy and beyond. For instance, Namibia hosts the High Energy Spectroscopic System (HESS), which is an impressive gamma-ray telescope. The Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) in the small South African town of Sutherland is the largest optical telescope in the southern hemisphere.

In The Wake Of A Dying Sun
A team of scientists from the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO), Michigan State University (MSU), and the University of Miami (UM) have created novel 3D simulations to investigate how dying stars interact with their environment and nearby planets. The team created simulations of the interaction of red giant stars which eject dense outflows of gas and dust into their surroundings, on nearby companions such as planets and brown dwarfs.
A guide to the longest full eclipse of the moon this century, and more
On July 27th, 2018 most of the world will be treated to an extraordinary evening of activity in the sky. First, there will be a total lunar eclipse and although uncommon, this one is special because it’s going to last a lot longer than usual – in fact the longest this century. But that’s not all. Mars will shine brighter than it has in 15 years. Caroline Southey asked Dr Daniel Cunnama to explain the significance. There’s an eclipse of the moon tonight? Why is it such a big deal?
