America at 250: Americans Today Too Often Lack Gratitude for Our Blessings
The replacing of gratitude with grievance has diminished the way that Americans feel about America.
Can Christians Smoke Weed?
Is it right to consume cannabis? For most evangelicals in America, the question was long a moot point because marijuana consumption was illegal. But today, 24 states and the District of Columbia have legalized recreational marijuana use, and 40 states allow medical usage. According to the Pew Research Center, Americans broadly approve of marijuana consumption now, with only 23 percent of adults believing it to be morally wrong.
Wise Decision Making in Everyday Life
Jan Huber photo | Unsplash How do we pursue wise decision making about questions and decisions that are not explicitly mentioned in Scripture? By Daniel Darling If we want to follow Christ as Lord over all our lives and we want to listen when Jesus says, “If you love me… keep my commands” (John 14:15), what does this look like in real life? How do we know what those commandments are? We know them through knowing Scripture.
America’s 250th: Reflections on Faithful Christian Citizenship
This July marks 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. As we approach the SBC Annual Meeting in Orlando, we’re developing resources to help equip your congregations to live out their faith in the public square—engaging in cultural issues while remaining faithful gospel witnesses. On today’s episode, you’ll hear from Dr. RaShan Frost, ERLC director of research, as he speaks with Dr. Nathan Finn and Dan Darling.
An ignominious anniversary
Fifty years ago this month, Cambodia adopted a new constitution—one that enshrined the principles of communism into law. By Marxist decree, 1976 was to be “year zero” in which Cambodia’s history was to be forgotten. It was the culmination of a 9-month revolution, led by the guerilla group, the Khmer Rouge, which in turn was led by the bloodthirsty Pol Pot, a Marxist radical educated in Paris.

Christmas in Wartime - Christianity Today
How can Christians possibly pause for Advent in a world so dark? Illustration by Jill DeHaan We drove down busy streets, sirens intermittently breaking up the feigned normalcy of a city in wartime. Ukrainians worked and shopped, worshiped and worried throughout Kyiv, miles from the front but seconds from a missile strike. We toured a children's hospital with an entire ward reduced to a pile of rubble, the target of a Russian bomber.
How can churches address sports betting?
Sports betting or gambling has been on the rise in recent years, and now more than ever, it’s seeping its way into our everyday lives. From advertisements on our phones to the big screens, the gambling industry is fighting for our attention. But why is this such a problem? This industry preys on the weak and vulnerable, and profits off of those too addicted to turn away. Welcome to The ERLC Podcast where our goal is to help you think biblically about today’s cultural issues.
Senator Lankford on being a Christian in the public square
In a time of intense political polarization, finding examples of faith-informed leadership that brings people together rather than pushing them apart can feel rare. That’s why today’s conversation between Brent Leatherwood, president of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, and Republican Sen. James Lankford from Oklahoma offers such a refreshing perspective on how Christian faith can shape public service. Before serving in Congress, Sen.

Living together before marriage may be a cultural norm. To practice anything else may seem strange and old-fashioned. Yet the way of Jesus is countercultural. Resisting cohabitation is born out of love for and trust in the God who created you to pursue what’s better: genuine marital intimacy built on a foundation of commitment and covenant. College life is finally over. You and your partner have started attending a new church. You love it there. The preacher opens the Bible every week.
A Public Witness in a Polarized World
In his book Political Gospel, Patrick Schreiner helps pastors answer the question: What does a faithful Christian public witness look like? By Daniel Darling What does faithful Christian witness look like for an American Christian? This is the topic many believers are grappling with as we head toward the November presidential election.
ERLC Podcast #362 | Vice President Mike Pence on Serving in the Public Square
Today, we have an exclusive episode with Vice President Mike Pence about serving in the public square. Welcome to the ERLC Podcast where our goal is to help you think biblically about today’s cultural issues. Since 2016, the name that has been synonymous with our current political environment is President Donald Trump. However, within the Trump administration is a name with which we should be familiar and should want to know more about: Vice President Mike Pence.
Criticizing Critical Race Theory-and Its Critics
Last year I joined a group of Christian leaders, Black and white, on a tour of the National Museum of African American History and Culture located in Washington, DC. Even though I've read quite a bit about slavery and Jim Crow, I was still physically and emotionally disturbed by the visual depictions of the systemic and violent ways in which people of color were treated for centuries of American history. There is no sugarcoating this history.
We Need Leaders Calling the Church to Faithfulness out of Love, Not Resentment Disguised as Courage
In the last few years, there have been quite a few polemics published that slam evangelicalism. Some have had good but hard words we need to hear. But most suffer from the same problems which make their attempt at being prophetic fall on deaf ears: 1) Self righteousness. Almost always the writer is convinced of his/her own moral rectitude and the depravity of everyone else. He/She has perfectly nailed the proper approach to, say, politics, while everyone else is wrong. Zero humility. 2) Resentment.
How Pastors Can Prepare Their People for an Election Year
This is an excellent message by Daniel Darling published by Lifeway Research with their permission. You may not agree with some of it, but I am confident you will take away something good from this message, I certainly did. I also posted below a message from Christian historian Bill Federer on, ‘Elections, Ballots and Voting.’ We must not take a blind eye to what is going around us. Church leaders need to equip their people to navigate the politics of an election year.
How Pastors Can Prepare Their People for an Election Year
Church leaders need to equip their people to navigate the politics of an election year. And some guiding principles can serve pastors well. By Daniel Darling The calendar has turned over, and we are now in the thick of a political season in a presidential election year. Pastors around the country understand the gravity of this moment and want to lead their people well. So, what does that look like? Every church and every context is going to be a little different.
Peace on earth? How it's possible at Christmas despite world at war Original
What does 'peace on earth' mean at Christmas in a world at war? Christmas is not about fake happiness or a plastic smile, nor is it naivete about the presence of evil. It's the beautiful reality of God with us. Even in our despair. Daniel Darling | Opinion contributor Bethlehem's wartime Christmas brings no comfort or joy In the past, as many as 150,000 people have traveled to Bethlehem in the West Bank for Christmas. This year, war has stopped tourism there.

Christmas is not about fake happiness or a plastic smile, nor is it naivete about the presence of evil. It's the beautiful reality of God with us. Even in our despair. Daniel Darling Opinion contributor In a Christmas Eve speech in 1941, delivered 17 days after the Japanese killed more than 2,300 Americans in a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, President Franklin Roosevelt reflected on the appropriateness of celebrating Christmas in a time of war.
After ‘Roe’: The Pro-Life Movement’s Next 50 Years
Tuesday night was another blow to the pro-life movement as Ohio voted overwhelmingly to enshrine the right to abortion into its constitution. This was the seventh win out of seven such referenda, including in many conservative-leaning states. In Virginia, where Governor Glenn Youngkin promised to sign a 15-week limit on abortions, pro-life Republicans both failed to flip the Senate and also lost the House, largely on the strength of consistent pro-abortion messaging by Democrats.

The selection of the Rafale M (Marine) variant to meet the Indian Navy’s requirement for new fighters to operate off its two carriers – the INS Vikrant and INS Vikramaditya – was announced on July 14, one day after the potential acquisition was cleared by the country’s Defence Acquisition Council (DAC).

What Forgiveness Is and Isn’t
ShareTweetPinPocketFlipboard I often talk about the importance of forgiveness in my own life, and over the deep hurts I’ve endured. But inevitable questions about biblical forgiveness arise. Does forgiveness imply we ignore issues of justice and restitution? Does forgiveness absolve the guilt of the perpetrator? Does forgiveness imply reconciliation? It’s important for us to understand what is demanded of us in forgiveness.
Should Christians Pray Before Meals? What Does the Bible Say?
The relationship between prayer and eating is further enforced in the New Testament. In every case the Lord Jesus is shown eating or feeding people, He blesses the food, and expressing gratitude to the Father before, and sometimes after, the meal is a part of that blessing. Some examples of Jesus blessing and giving thanks around meals include: Feeding the 5,000: Matthew 14:19 “And he directed the people to sit down on the grass.
Reality proves hard to beat
A recently released survey by the Public Religion Research Institute shows that a significant majority of Americans still believe in the reality of two genders, and it’s not just the much-covered cohort of evangelicals who are shaping public opinion. According to the latest numbers, 65 percent of Americans—up from 59 percent two years ago—believe that there are only two genders, male and female. Unsurprisingly, this belief is held by 90 percent of Republicans.
An Election Is Coming. Are Pastors Ready?
As much as pastors shouldn’t avoid the election, they also shouldn’t be obsessed with it. The body of Christ needs pastors, not pundits. By Dan Darling The 2024 presidential election season is upon us, with several declared candidates on the Republican side and a few on the Democratic side. The election promises to be as contested and divisive as any in the modern era. And if we are not careful, the politics of the moment could overwhelm and divide churches as it has in recent years.
The Power of a Father’s Faith
From Lifeway Research: The Bible talks a lot about generational faith. But a father’s faith doesn’t automatically become his child’s faith. It was 1971, and a twenty-year-old young man—just starting his apprenticeship as a plumber, living with his sister, escaping a broken and chaotic homelife—walked forward at a Billy Graham Crusade at McCormick Place in Chicago. That young man was my father. In that moment, he found Jesus, and a family that had very little interaction with Christianity was reborn.

France's Naval Group, which is completing a contract to build six Scorpène submarine for the Indian Navy, was considered well placed to win India's next six-boat contract which now seems close to being awarded to its German rival.

A case for optimism about Generation Z
This month, almost four million high-school students will walk down the aisle and graduate from high school in America. Among those will be my oldest daughter, Grace. It’s hard to capture in words the swell of emotions I feel, the slow letting go of our parenting control as we ease her into adult life. My daughter, like her Generation Z counterparts, is facing a world of challenges, including a divided America whose only leadership options seem to be broadly unpopular Boomers from both parties.

COMMENTARY: 5 principles for equipping your church to think biblically about cultural issues
One of the enduring myths about evangelical churches is that congregations are too political. It is true that a few churches serve up partisan content on Sundays. Most of the time, however, Christians have the opposite experience. When it comes to being equipped on how to steward their citizenship, there is often little theological reflection. As a result, the public theology of God’s people is formed by other voices throughout the week, from social media to pundits to politicians.
The Passing of America’s Pastor
Even just hours before dying Friday of pancreatic cancer at age 72, Tim Keller’s final public words indicate he left the world the same way he lived in it—telling others about his faith. “I’m ready to see Jesus,” he said Thursday night, according to his son Michael. “I can’t wait to see Jesus. Take me home.” It’s hard to quantify the impact of Keller, an author, New York City pastor, scholar, and intellectual leader. In many ways, he became America’s pastor.

Tim Keller, retired New York megachurch pastor and bestselling author, dies at 72
(RNS)— Tim Keller, an influential Presbyterian Church in America minister who founded a network of evangelical Christian churches in New York City, has died. He was 72. Known for his brainy and winsome approach to evangelism, Keller founded Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Manhattan in 1989, and grew the congregation into a hub for a network of churches across the city. His 2008 book, “The Reason for God: Belief in an Age of Skepticism,” reached the New York Times bestseller list.
Poll: Religious attendance is shrinking but those who remain are happy
(RNS) — For American religion in recent years, the story has often been one of decline. A shrinking number of Americans — 16 percent — say religion is the most important thing in their lives, down from 20 percent in 2013. And nearly 3 in 10 — or 29 percent — say religion is not important to them at all, up from 19 percent 10 years ago. Those are among the findings in a new survey by the Public Religion Research Institute on religion and congregations fielded in 2022 and published Tuesday (May 16).
Lottie Moon’s impact on Georgia town still being felt 150 years after she left
CARTERSVILLE, Ga. – Lottie Moon was in a worship service at what’s now First Baptist Church when she heard God’s call to missions, prompting her to leave Cartersville for China 150 years ago. The 4-foot, 3-inch firebrand would go on to become a giant in the world of international missions, inspiring countless Southern Baptists to take the Gospel to the nations while at the same time anchoring this Georgia community’s commitment to share the Gospel globally.

Abortion pill case moves to appeals court, on track for Supreme Court
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A three-judge panel of the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals heard arguments Wednesday (May 17) over whether the Food and Drug Administration approval of mifepristone should be revoked more than two decades after it was granted. The case is likely to wind up at the Supreme Court, which already intervened to keep the drug available while the legal fight winds through the courts. The high court’s decision came after a Texas-based judge revoked the drug’s approval.

Germany's Tortuous Path to Chinook Order
After the prospective Franco-German heavy helicopter sank without a trace two decades ago, Germany looked at both the CH-47F Chinook and the Sikorsky CH-53K as possible replacements for its 50-year old CH-53Gs, with the former finally selected because it is much cheaper.
What is a mother worth?
The English writer Agatha Christie once said “A mother’s love for her child is like nothing else in the world. It knows no law, no pity, it dares all things and crushes down remorselessly all that stands in its path.” This past Sunday, families paused and honored the mothers in their lives. But for me, it was a more personal and bittersweet holiday. A week ago, my mother, age 69, passed away from complications with dementia, her family by her side.
Germany’s Chinook Procurement Effort Gets Liftoff
Germany’s years-long effort to replenish its rotary-wing transport capabilities got a boost on May 11 when the U.S. State Department gave formal notification of approval on a government-to-government foreign military sales (FMS) request for 60 CH-47F Block II Chinook heavy-lift helicopters. The estimated cost for the potential buy is placed at $8.5 billion, which would include the helicopters, their engines (plus spares), and all key subsystems and equipment.
