Scotland 21-43 New Zealand: Nations Championship rugby union – live
LIVE – Updated at 16:16 Minute-by-minute report: Scotland lose their 32nd of 34 past meetings at Murrayfield. Join Daniel Gallan for reaction. Gregor Townsend weighs in It was disappointing. Though I was disappointed with the first half as well. We gave them too many opportunities. Our attack was great but we couldn't get the ball in the second half. We had enough to build on in the first half, but didn't do that.

LIVE – Updated at 14:06 Over-by-over report : Australia begin chasing the Proteas' first innings 329 on the second day of the series decider in Cape Town. Join our writers for updates. 63rd over: Australia 216-4 (Inglis 11, Carey 20) Carey was watchful before but he's showing some class now, skipping down the track to half drive, half flick Harmer for four down through mid-on. Lovely shot. Harmer then goes flatter and keeps Carey on strike for the rest of the over.
Marco Jansen belongs to a great tradition but top all-rounders are hard to find
Daniel Gallan If you were to bioengineer a cricketer in a laboratory, which attributes would you give them? You would make them tall, with long limbs and a whiplash action to extract steep bounce. Add speed, movement both ways and a left arm to offer a point of difference. With the bat, make sure they can whack sixes but also go down the gears when an innings starts to unravel. For an added trait, have them catch meteorites in the outfield and the cordon. You might end up with Marco Jansen.

England all out for 241 against Pakistan: tri-series one day international cricket – live
LIVE – Updated at 11:40 England must attempt to bounce back from Thursday's crushing defeat by Sri Lanka against Pakistan in Lahore. Join our writers. England all-out for 241 in 46.4 overs Shaheen and Babar combine as Crocombe is caught at extra cover as he tried to heave a back of a length ball. The Pakistan captain finishes with 4-36 and Atkinson ends unbeaten on 36. Great work from Pakistan combined with poor top order batting means England fall well short of par.

Daniel Gallan And with that I'll sign off. We'll be back tomorrow for the final day of this second Test. Will South Africa claim the six wickets they need to square the series? Labuschagne c Jansen b Harmer 39 (Australia 100-2) WHY DID HE DO THAAAAT?! Oh Marnus, what have you done? Harmer had him pinned on his crease for five balls. Is that what compelled him to try and slog a six over long on? Whatever it was, he couldn't get all of it and sent it high into the gloomy sky.

Sandpaper made Australia the story in 2018 while South Africa's achievement faded into irrelevance
For South African cricketers, administrators and supporters, the most surprising aspect of the Sandpaper scandal was not that it happened. After all, the ball had been suspiciously reverse-swinging during the first two Tests of that ill-fated series in 2018. The atmosphere had turned febrile after a stairwell bust-up between Quinton de Kock and David Warner in Durban and after supporters directed misogynistic abuse at Warner and his family in Gqeberha.

‘Sandpapergate’ and a forgotten series win – by the South Africans who were there
Australia will walk onto Kingsmead in Durban on Friday for their first Test in South Africa in more than eight years. The last time they were in these parts they arrived having recently regained the Ashes, captained by the leading batter in men’s Test cricket and determined to impose themselves on an old rival. They left without their captain or vice-captain, with their coach on his way out and with Australian cricket engulfed by one of the biggest scandals in its history.

The major caveat hanging over the Springboks' defeat in Perth
Australia deserved every second of its celebration in Perth. The Wallabies scored five tries against the world champions, led 42-17 with a quarter of an hour left, and somehow survived the closing minutes with four players in the sin bin. Len Ikitau was outstanding, Joseph-Aukuso Sua’ali’i helped win the aerial contest, and Les Kiss’s side looked quicker and more forceful for most of the match.

2026 WXV Global Series preview: South Africa
If the past 12 months have taught us anything, it’s that if a game of rugby lasted only 40 minutes, the Springbok Women would be Women’s Rugby World Cup contenders. At Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025, South Africa went into half-time level with the reigning champions, having matched New Zealand’s physicality and disrupted their attack. The Black Ferns eventually pulled away to win 46-17, but the Springbok Women had shown that the gap was narrowing.
Robots bowling the perfect doosra are some way off but AI is already reshaping cricket
Daniel Kokotajlo, a former researcher at OpenAI, warned last week that it was possible we would end up “creating a new species that ends up ruling the world” . Once the initial shock wore off, and I'd considered what this could mean for my young children and the future of the planet, another thought popped into my head: will this new species be able to swing an old cricket ball or navigate a seaming green top? It sounds frivolous. It is frivolous.

South Africa vs New Zealand is rugby’s ‘money game’. Why is it being played in the U.S?
The fourth and final Test of South Africa’s series against New Zealand has a nickname that will make rugby union traditionalists do a double-take: the “money game”. Rian Oberholzer, South Africa’s rugby chief executive, does not flinch at the description. The match will be played in Baltimore because it is expected to generate substantially more cash, potentially up to $8million (£5.9m).
