Leon’s Furniture Stock: Impressive Past, Navigating Uncertain Future
Leon’s Furniture (TSE: LNF) is a Canadian success story. Founded in 1909 by Lebanese immigrant Ablan Leon, the company went public in 1969. Most shares of the furniture retailer remain held by the Leon family today. Leon’s has spread its way from Southwestern Ontario to all 10 Canadian provinces, helped along by a C$700-million acquisition of rival firm The Brick in 2012.
Stella-Jones Stock: Kindling for Fiery Returns?
Pressure-treated wood fanatics know all about Stella-Jones (TSE: SJ) (STLJF). By putting lumber in a watery solution full of preservatives for an extended period of time, you’re left with a product fit for use on docks, decks, utility poles, railways, and anywhere where moisture and rotting can be an issue. Incorporated in 1992, Stella-Jones has become a powerful figure in this niche, boasting over 2,400 employees and 42 plants scattered across the United States and Canada.
Lockheed Martin: New Canadian Deal among Promising Factors
Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) scored a tidy win at the end of March, when the Canadian government announced that it would be purchasing 88 F-35 fighter jets to revamp its out-of-date air force. The Canadian government has spent decades researching and evaluating different options for its new fleet of military aircraft, and though final negotiations have yet to take place, the recent announcement is another big win for LMT, which is no stranger to large military contracts.

Daniel Goffenberg | @interndaniel November 9, 2015, 4:28 PM Daniel Goffenberg @interndaniel November 9, 2015, 4:28 PM It’s been almost four years since then Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov became an HBO darling, after expressing his interest in outer space, specifically the “humongous” size of our universe.
Persons of Interest: 4 players on Team Canada's radar
Team Canada might have to make room for a few new faces on their World Cup roster. GM Doug Armstrong made a few waves Tuesday when he announced that the following players had played their way onto his radar for Team Canada. Doug Armstrong says four Canadian players have worked their way into the World Cup conversation: Toffoli, Muzzin, Gallagher, Stone.
A history of NHL goals from the other end of the ice
It’s every goalie’s worst nightmare. A harmless looking shot from outside your own blue-line that dips, or bounces, and suddenly it’s in the back of the net. Last night, Jonathan Bernier was on the receiving end of such a play, and though he’s hardly the first victim, and certainly won’t be the last, his gaffe won’t do him any favours going forward. For the first time since being brought to Toronto, he may not have the inside edge on the starter’s job.
Finnish company sends Noah Dobson new stick after costly WJC snap
Daniel Goffenberg | @interndaniel January 4, 2019, 11:30 AM Daniel Goffenberg @interndaniel January 4, 2019, 11:30 AM Noah Dobson’s wound just got a little more salt put into it. Dobson was the Canadian defenceman whose stick exploded in overtime against Finland at the world juniors, leading to an odd-man rush the other way. The Finns converted, eliminating the defending champions from the tournament on home ice. But what if Dobson’s stick had held together?
4 things we learned in the NHL: Hibernation might be good for Blackhawks
What happened in the NHL on Tuesday? Nothing too unpredictable, really. A team that historically struggles out in the elements did just that, a consensus Cup contender looked the part, and arguably the league’s least-heralded sniper found the back of the net once again. Oh, and a certain mustachioed someone’s legal-but-really-mean hit from Monday escaped discipline. Here are four things we learned.
3 English teams face German opposition in Champions League
NYON, Switzerland — One of the fiercest international rivalries in soccer will play out three times in the last 16 of the Champions League when a trio English teams take on German opposition. Five-time European champions Liverpool and Bayern Munich were drawn Monday to face each other, Manchester City was paired with Schalke and Tottenham will play Bundesliga leader Borussia Dortmund. Also, three-time defending champion Real Madrid will first play at Ajax, while Barcelona was drawn with Lyon.
5 things we learned in the NHL: Reaves should have quit while ahead
There were three hat tricks in the NHL on Tuesday, and plenty of action. A pair of young American stars lived up to the hype in the Battle of the QEW, the Calgary Flames burned the roof off in front of their dads, while Max Domi and Jonathan Drouin continued to flex in Montreal. Here are some things we learned on a day that began with the NHL opening its arms to Seattle, and ended with a young netminder making a name for himself in the desert.

MLB Rumour Roundup: Blue Jays have interest in Dallas Keuchel
The Toronto Blue Jays have some room to fill out their rotation, and seem to be at least considering making a big splash in free agency. Fancred’s Jon Heyman has reported that the team has interest in starter Dallas Keuchel. The move appears unlikely given the money it would take to land Keuchel, the AL Cy Young winner in 2015.

Undrafted Philippe Myers on pace to make GMs regret passing him over
No one would confuse Philippe Myers for Martin St. Louis. For starters, the 6-foot-5 Myers, currently plying his trade with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms (AHL affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers), has about nine inches on the 2018 Hall of Famer. And St. Louis has 1,134 games, multiple trophies and a Stanley Cup on the young man yet to make his NHL debut. But the two have something in common: They were both cut by the Calgary Flames.
Penguins fan gets kidney transplant after sign goes viral
Some fans use signs to ask for souvenir pucks at hockey games. Kelly Sowatsky used one to get a kidney. The 31-year-old school teacher attended a Pittsburgh Penguins game last March with her fiancé armed with a plea that would save her life. “Calling All Hockey Fans! I Need A Kidney! Kidney! Kidney! Gratefully Yours, Kelly,” read her sign, which was picked up by the Penguins’ social media team and tweeted out. Jeff Lynd, all the way out in Delaware, stepped up to be Sowatsky’s saviour.
Senators waive Mike Condon day after he gives up awful goal
The veteran netminder was placed on waivers Wednesday, after a disastrous outing on Tuesday that saw him get pulled after giving up an embarrassing goal from the opposing blue line. Condon joined the Senators via trade in 2016-17 and provided solid work in the Ottawa crease with starter Craig Anderson out after his wife’s cancer diagnosis. The Senators rewarded the Holliston, Mass., native with a three-year contract the following off-season worth $2.4 million annually.
Hurricanes, Sebastian Aho discussing long-term contract
The Carolina Hurricanes are optimistic they’ll have Sebastian Aho locked up to a long-term contract, eventually. The two sides have engaged in contract talks and Hurricanes GM and president Don Waddell told The News & Observer that in terms of the “amount of money we’re talking, there’s not a crazy difference.” Aho has fully arrived as a star this season, his third in the NHL after being drafted in the second round in 2015.
Blue Jackets' Tortorella laments friendly NHL: 'There's no hate'
Daniel Goffenberg | @interndaniel October 26, 2018, 12:47 PM Daniel Goffenberg @interndaniel October 26, 2018, 12:47 PM John Tortorella thinks the NHL is too friendly. The fiery Columbus Blue Jackets head coach told reporters on Thursday that it bugs him to see opponents acting all buddy-buddy on the ice. “The game’s changed and for some dinosaurs that are in it, it’s very frustrating, I have to admit,” said Tortorella ahead of his team’s 7-4 win over the St. Louis Blues.
Hurricanes recall Scott Darling from AHL conditioning stint
Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Scott Darling is back with the big club. Darling missed the start of the season with a lower-body injury, and was sent down to the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers on Monday for a conditioning stint. He made 25 saves in a 3-1 win with the Checkers on Wednesday, and was recalled by the Hurricanes on Thursday. The 29-year-old has been something of a late bloomer in his career, losing his spot at the Univeristy of Maine due to excessive drinking and partying in 2010.
Islanders move John Tavares' return game to Nassau Coliseum
John Tavares will face his old team back where it all began. The New York Islanders announced on Wednesday that their Feb. 28 game against the Toronto Maple Leafs will take place at Nassau Coliseum rather than Barclays Center, where it had been originally scheduled. The Islanders played out of Nassau for the first six seasons of Tavares’ NHL career before moving to Barclays Center in Brooklyn in 2015.
Frank Corrado joins Marlies on AHL contract
Frank Corrado is back with the Toronto Maple Leafs organization. The defenceman signed an AHL deal with the Marlies on Monday, bringing himself back to the franchise he spent parts of two seasons with from 2015-17. Corrado was claimed off waivers by the Leafs ahead of the 2015-16 season, appearing in 39 games for the last-place team and scoring one goal and six assists.
4 things we learned in the NHL: Here comes the Coyotes offence
A young team in the desert finally put up a performance worthy of its promise, every team in the NHL has lost at least once, a longtime sniper found the back of the net for the first time this season, and there’s something funny going on in Columbus. Here are four things we learned in the NHL on Thursday. The Arizona Coyotes got off to a pretty toothless start this year, getting shut out in three of their first four games.
Canadiens honour Tomas Plekanec; Bergevin, Molson wear turtlenecks
The Montreal Canadiens honoured centre Tomas Plekanec for reaching 1,000 NHL games played on Wednesday, with the team’s owner and GM getting snug for the presentation. GM Marc Bergevin and owner Geoff Molson donned Plekanec’s signature turtlenecks as part of the ceremony, which saw the 35-year-old receive the traditional silver stick given to those who reach the impressive milestone. The ceremony also involved a video presentation featuring former teammates sending their congratulations.
Islanders draw just 8,790 fans to game against Sharks
The New York Islanders can’t build a new rink fast enough. A paltry 8,790 fans took in a shutout victory over the San Jose Sharks on Monday, a new low for the team since it moved to Brooklyn in 2015-16. The franchise is no stranger to sparse crowds, ranking last in average attendance (12,002), and second-last in average attendance percentage last season (75.9), but Monday’s tilt – which, it should be noted had a 1 p.m. local start time – represented a new low.
Raptors' Bench Mob tries lamb brain, talks chemistry, playoffs
The last time we checked in on Serge Ibaka’s YouTube series How hungry are you?, the Toronto Raptors big was serving up fried worms to former teammate DeMar DeRozan. This time, it was the Bench Mob’s turn to be fed, and Ibaka played off their on-court smarts by serving up some lamb brain. The group of Norm Powell, Pascal Siakam, Fred VanVleet, Delon Wright and OG Anunoby was mostly game for at least trying the dish, known as cervelles in France.
Carolina Hurricanes to wear Hartford Whalers jerseys vs. Boston on Dec. 23
The Carolina Hurricanes are digging into their past, for one night at least. The team announced today that it would wear the green and blue Hartford Whalers uniforms for a game against the Boston Bruins on Dec. 23. It’s a popular look that finished second in the NHL’s all-time uniform rankings list, losing to the Chicago Blackhawks. The Whalers began play in the defunct World Hockey Association in 1972 and joined the NHL in 1979.
Knicks' Enes Kanter really, really wants to make the post-season

Most emotional NHL return games to look forward to this season
It was a long, busy NHL off-season. Thankfully though, the puck will drop on 2018-19 soon, giving us 1,271 games + playoffs to enjoy. Some of these games will be high-stakes matchups between two teams hungry for a playoff spot. Others will involve the Detroit Red Wings. And some of them will feature a player returning to the home rink of a team he used to play for. Here are some of those worth watching out for: The ‘Welcome Back’ crowd Tyler Bozak @ Toronto Maple Leafs, Oct.
Report: Milos Raonic to replace Juan Martin del Potro at Laver Cup
Canada’s No. 1 is expected to replace Juan Martin del Potro at the second edition of the Laver Cup, which will take place at the United Center on Sept. 21-23. The 27-year-old most recently helped Canada clinch its Davis Cup tie against the Netherlands this past weekend. Raonic would join Kevin Anderson, John Isner, Diego Schwartzman, Jack Sock, and Nick Kyrgios on Team World, which fell to Team Europe at last year’s event in Prague, Czech Republic.
Jaden Brown ready to build on status as top Canadian for 2019 draft
The 16-year-old shortstop for the under-17 Ontario Blue Jays is constantly on the road, going from tournament to tournament – typically south of the border – in order to improve as a player, and showcase his talent to evaluators. “I love travelling,” says Brown.
Rasmus Dahlin's Sabres debut was a smashing success
Rasmus Dahlin played his first game in a Buffalo Sabres sweater on Friday, and could not have made a better impression. Dahlin, finally set to enter the NHL after two years of hype, took the ice as part of the Prospects Challenge, one of many rookie tournaments currently ongoing as the pre-pre-season gets underway. The No. 1 pick got started with a big hit on 25-year-old Ryan Schmelzer in the first period.
Matt Stajan signs with Munich Red Bulls of DEL
Matt Stajan’s NHL playing career appears to be over. The 34-year-old is signing with the Munich Red Bulls of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga, Germany’s top league. Stajan played parts of 15 seasons in the NHL after being a second-round pick in 2002 of the Toronto Maple Leafs. He made his NHL debut in 2002-03, before establishing himself as a full-time NHLer the following season.
Sources: PGA plans major changes for revamped FedEx Cup

Five people aware of the discussions say FedEx Cup points will not be involved in the final playoff event at East Lake.
U.S. Open draw: 6 storylines to watch out for early on
The draw for the 2018 U.S. Open was announced on Thursday and here are some interesting potential storylines we’ve noticed that could play out in the early part of the tournament. Milos Raonic is attempting to make the draining climb back into the world top 10, and he’ll have to put together some significant runs at Slams and Masters events in order to do that. The draw in New York didn’t make it easy on the Canadian No. 1, who will be facing American Jared Donaldson right off the bat.
Auston Matthews, Patrik Laine receive identical ratings for NHL 19
The Toronto Maple Leafs had the choice and chose Matthews, the prototypical franchise centre, with the Winnipeg Jets turning their lottery luck into the sniper back at the 2016 NHL Draft. As much fun as it has been to watch the young talents thrive since joining the league, it’s also been fun to compare the two! (It’s also fun to re-visit their first meeting as NHLers, which ended with a Laine hat trick being scored in overtime as the Jets overcame a 4-0 deficit.
Stefanos Tsitsipas appears well on his way to tennis superstardom
Tennis fans have been waiting, patiently, for someone to break through. To emerge out of the shadows of the Big Four — Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray — who have dominated the sport for about 15 years. Stefanos Tsitsipas has what it takes to do just that. He showed as much on Thursday, stepping onto centre court at Aviva Centre in Toronto and ending Djokovic’s singles run at the Rogers Cup in Round 3.
Proposing 5 potential Christmas Day NHL games
The NBA has announced its national TV broadcast schedule, with a juicy slate of five Christmas matchups revealed, as is tradition. Getting a Christmas game is sort of the NBA’s way of validating your relevance in the league, with marketability, entertainment-value, and title hopes all considered when making the schedule. The NHL prefers to give its players the holiday off (its marquee games are spread out around the Winter Classic and Stadium Series contests), but what if it didn’t?
Arizona Coyotes to retire Shane Doan's No. 19 jersey
The Arizona Coyotes will retire Shane Doan’s No. 19 sweater on Feb. 24 ahead of a game against the Winnipeg Jets. The Coyotes announced the initiative on Wednesday, and in doing so will have made Doan the first player in franchise history to have his number retired. Keith Tkachuk (7), Jeremy Roenick (97) and Teppo Numminen (27) as well as old Winnipeg Jets players Bobby Hull (9), Thomas Steen (25) and Dale Hawerchuk (10) have been inducted into the club’s ring of honour.
Mark Stone, Senators head to arbitration $4 million apart
The numbers are in for Ottawa Senators forward Mark Stone‘s impending arbitration hearing. And they are something. Stone, arguably Ottawa’s best forward, is asking for $9 million, while the Senators are countering at $5 million. As Elliotte Friedman noted in a later tweet, the most an arbitrator has ever awarded was $7.5 million, to Shea Weber back in 2011. The 26-year-old Stone led Ottawa in points this past season, finishing with 62 in just 58 games.
Senators' Cody Ceci asks for $6 million ahead of arbitration
The numbers put forth by Cody Ceci and the Ottawa Senators have been released ahead of Wednesday’s arbitration hearing, with the two sides $2.65 million apart. Ceci’s camp is asking for $6 million, while the Senators are proposing a $3.35-million deal for the 24-year-old, who had five goals and 19 points this past season. The five-year NHL veteran’s play has come under fire in recent seasons.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion is ranked 28th in the world in the WTA rankings after taking over a year off from competitive tennis due to the birth of her child. Max Domi on Saku Koivu, hating the Leafs, getting dad a Canadiens sweater
The Max Domi-for-Alex Galchenyuk swap earned mixed reviews from the perspective of the Montreal Canadiens at the time, but it might not take long for fans to come around on their feisty new winger. The Canadiens had Domi read questions from Habs Nation on Twitter, and the results were quite endearing. Domi, son of longtime Toronto Maple Leafs enforcer Tie, didn’t shy away from his past when speaking to his new fanbase, but made it clear he’s committed to Les Glorieux.
Milos Raonic's path to Wimbledon semifinals just got way easier
Milos Raonic has to focus one match at a time, and knows he can’t afford to look too far ahead. But that doesn’t mean we can’t. A series of upsets has left the hard-serving Canadian as the highest seed in his quadrant, with a semifinal very much in reach. It started with Stan Wawrinka – whose battles with a knee injury brought him to Wimbledon as the ATP’s 224th-ranked player – knocking out the sixth-seeded Gregor Dimitrov in Round 1.
Once a critic, Brazil coach Tite now defends Neymar
SOCHI, Russia — Once a critic of Neymar’s antics, Brazil coach Tite now defends the demeanour of his team’s star. “Winning or losing is part of the game,” Tite said in 2012 after coaching Corinthians in a match against Santos and Neymar. “But to pretend and try to take advantage, that’s not part of the game.

The Washington Capitals were intent on keeping their guy and they did. News broke on Sunday that pending unrestricted free agent John Carlson had agreed to an eight-year contract worth $64 million to stay in Washington, D.C., a deal that will give Carlson the NHL’s 16th-highest cap hit (tied with four others at $8 million) in 2018-19. The 28-year-old led all defencemen in points this past season with 68 and has been at or near 40 points in each of the past five seasons.
