Understanding the 'Simple Church' Movement
The term “simple church” is birthed out of frustration. We need to describe this phenomenon often called “house church,” but all people in this movement do not like being identified by a “house.” They point out that these churches do not meet just in houses; they also meet in restaurants, businesses, or other settings. What defines simple churches is not location but emphasis.
Keep It Simple: Don't Waste Your Efforts on the Disinterested
Have you ever wondered what life would look like if you were far away from the responsibilities of the pulpit? If so, then you are not alone. The question “Is it worth it to … ?” seems to be on the lips of many pastors and church leaders today. For example: • Is it worth it to talk about the upcoming election? I know everyone in my church is thinking about it. But is the potential backlash I might get worth it?
When You Find Yourself Drifting
Have you heard about The World’s Toughest Race? It was a 671 km race over 11 days in Fiji that involved paddling, sailing, mountain biking, whitewater rafting, rappelling, climbing and canyoneering. That’s the equivalent to 16 marathons, but multiplied exponentially in difficulty. When you watch the first episode, everyone is absolutely stoked, excited and revved up to compete. Of the 60 teams from 30 countries, some have been training for months, and others for years.
The Inexcusably Accepted Racial Bias of Pulse Oximeters
Dear Editor, Sjoding et al’s report on the racial bias of pulse oximetry brought necessary light to an unacceptable problem that we have known about for more than a decade (1-3). Pulse oximetry is a device heavily relied on by healthcare providers in caring for patients with hypoxia. The potential that we may be treating darker pigmented patients differently because of an accepted flaw in device design is enraging.

Book Review: Learning to Listen, Learning to Teach by Jane Vella
You are here: Home / Leadership / Books / Book Review: Learning to Listen, Learning to Teach by Jane Vella Jane Vella’s, Learning to Listen, Learning to Teach, is written for both adult learners and teachers of adults. It has the primary assumption that dialogue is better than monologue for adult education. After all, with all the life experience that every adult brings to the classroom, both teacher and fellow student will benefit significantly by dialoguing with one another.
Discipleship in the Local Church
You are here: Home / Leadership / Discipleship in the Local Church When I spoke at the Calvary Chapel Global Pastors and Leaders Conference last year, I had the privilege of being on “Things That Matter” with Brian Brodersen, who is the Senior Pastor of Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa. Check out this episode where he interviews me on my faith story, the role of discipleship in the local church, spiritual maturity, and how we can define maturity differently.
Preoccupied with Love: One-on-One with Colin Smith on Nominal Christianity
Ed: It’s hard to deny that we are living in challenging times culturally. The church’s influence is fading, and we are struggling to find answers to some hard questions. What’s your take on the health of the church today, especially as it relates to our witness?” Colin: Church health is not the same as church size.
Emerging Adults and the Church: Is There Really an Exodus?
It seems every few weeks a new article makes the rounds on social media heralding the collapse of religion in America. Often central to these pieces is an emphasis on the role of emerging adults, focusing either on their declining church attendance or their rejection of traditional beliefs or practices. Emerging adulthood describes that phase of life between adolescence and full adulthood as marked by transitions like marriage and kids, settled careers, and owning a home.
Social Media and the Church
We live in the age of technology. This age has been characterized in other ways by other people, social commentators, and gurus of culture. Famously, Canadian philosopher Dr. Charles Taylor calls our age the “age of authenticity.” To be authentic is the final word in credibility. We must be true to ourselves. Dr. Ed Stetzer calls our age the “age of outrage.” We are constantly annoyed at each other and positioning for our tribal groups to gain precedence over one another. What is behind this?
One-on-One with Jerry Gillis on The Church of Western New York
Ed: Tell me about the Church of Western New York and Pentecost Together. The video shows a remarkable array of Christian leaders who I never imagined seeing together in one place. What did you do and how did you get there? Jerry Gillis: Two things. We've had two large scale events for the church in western New York. One was a 2013 Good Friday Together. We basically gathered ourselves together in downtown Buffalo and had worship and communion.
The Imposter Syndrome and Pastoral Ministry
“You’re a fraud.” “Everyone’s going to find out…eventually.” “Just stop, it’s not worth it.” “What difference do you think you’re actually going to make?” If you feel like I’ve just read your mind, welcome to the club! You’re officially a member of Imposter Syndrome Anonymous. In fact, since you’ve had these thoughts for a while, you might as well become a lifetime charter member. There’s just one catch—you can’t cancel your membership.
How Do You Disciple, Train, Teach, and Lead Others?
You are here: Home / Leadership / How Do You Disciple, Train, Teach, and Lead Others? Whatever method you use is likely what was used on you. Recently I filmed a 90 Second Leadership video for LifeWay Leadership on this important insight that reveals how we best learn. I hope you enjoy it! If you like what you saw on this video, I elaborate on this concept further in my book, No Silver Bullets: Five Small Shifts that will Transform Your Ministry.
A Letter from Eugene Peterson on Christian Celebrities, Transition, and the Megachurch
Eugene Peterson has deeply shaped my outlook on life, spirituality, ministry, and pastoring—probably more than anyone else. He will be deeply missed. I’m not here to give you a synopsis of his last days, if you want that, you can read it here. If you want to hear ministry lessons on the life of Eugene from a wide range of church leaders, you can click here. And if you want to read about the one sermon Eugene preached, you can be inspired here.
How a Commitment to Discipleship Multiplies Your Church
Churches that multiply understand that multiplication begins with discipleship. Discipleship cannot be an afterthought, or be relegated merely to a program for the devout and committed. Discipleship needs to be normalized in and throughout the life of the congregation, and it needs to be for everyone in the congregation: from the newcomer to the long-time member. Some churches become absorbed with technique and mistakenly conclude they are missional because of their increasing attendance.
Why Prepare for Ministry at a Liberal Arts College?
College is not for everyone. Nor is seminary. I’ve written plenty on that. But, what about those who are planning to follow what has become the standard route—from college to seminary, and then to ministry? I’m increasingly convinced that if you are going to pastor a congregation in many places, particularly in a well-educated context, you would do well to consider a liberal arts education before you go to seminary.
Why You Got Blocked: What’s Okay, and Not Okay, on Social Media
Social media is a place where we should first seek to be light and salt to a world that needs Jesus. But sometimes I do, and people ask me why. First, I found Jonathan Merritt’s article on how he mutes some and not others to be helpful. Merritt explains, “The biggest reason not to block is that it often makes matters worse by adding fuel to the fire. It gives the critic a reason to keep attacking you.
One-on-One with Joseph D’Souza on GAFCON
Despite the many severe challenges Christians face, the church is growing in India. Recently, nearly 2,000 bishops and church leaders from 50 countries gathered in Jerusalem for the Global Anglican Future Conference (GAFCON).
Mattresses, Experiences, and Instagramming Your Worship Service
When was the last time you bought a mattress? Did you walk around a showroom and awkwardly lie down on several of them? Did you close your eyes, try to get comfortable, and imagine what it would be like to sleep on it day after day? Did you then pay too much, and wait too long for it to be delivered to your house? No wonder the mattress industry was ripe for disruption.
Why Do We Neglect the Bible? (and what to do about it)
This last week, as I was writing a sermon on the end of Colossians, I came across these stark words from Charles Spurgeon, aka the Prince of Preachers. It’s from a sermon that he preached on December 14, 1873. Let’s keep on reading, Beyond all other books it will bear dissection, for it is vital in every sentence and word.
Just One More
It’s cute because after continually asking for just one more minute of sleep, one more push on the swing, and one more scoop on her cone, she realizes that maybe one more is just too much. We think it’s harmless—to fill up our time, our minds, our energy, efforts, and days with another show, with more work, with extra calories, with just one more __________, but is there ever an end to it all? When is enough enough? And does anything in this world ever truly satisfy?
Thinking of Starting a Podcast? Don’t! Until you read this…
I love podcasts. They’re informative, inspirational, (can be) fun, but best of all, they’re FREE… …well, that is, they’re free to the listener, but they are actually quite the investment (time + money) for the host. And that’s something that I can personally speak into.

Breaking Barriers
Our Q&A Webinars are a monthly segment designed for Plus Members to hear from leading experts in church planting, multisite, leadership, and multiplication. For this month’s segment, Ed Stetzer and I talk with Carey Nieuwhof. Carey shares his insight on growth, health, and breaking barriers from his book, Lasting Impact: 7 Powerful Conversations That Will Help Your Church Grow. Carey said one of the biggest barriers to church growth is size. The first barrier is reaching 200, then 400, then 800.
On Christians Unable to Critique President Trump: Loyalty and the Rorschach Test
This weekend was an important moment in our nation and, I think, for evangelical Christianity in America. Reflecting and responding to the events following Charlottesville is worth our time and energy.
Breathe in the Busyness
I’m not quite sure how to turn the setting off, but a few times a day, I hear this annoyingly soothing little jingle that reminds me it’s time to breathe. And to be completely honest, though I’ve had this watch for a while now, I’ve only done the breathing exercise once. Why? Because it always prompts me to breathe at the worst times. I’m either in a meeting, fighting through traffic, writing, or in a conversation with someone else. Doesn’t that sound ridiculous?
A Brief History of Recent Movements
Let’s go on a short journey exploring the recent history of significant movements that have shaped what we’re seeing in the West today. This history is important to digest as we look forward to the possibilities that lie ahead—with God! Less than 50 years ago, a movement was birthed to reach a specific subculture in the United States: the hippies.
Missional Living and the Scriptures - Daniel Im
Mission needs to be core to the identity of any and every local church. After all, a church without a clear understanding of its mission is a church without power. As scholar Martin Kähler said a century ago, “Mission is the mother of theology.” —— Enter the giveaway at the bottom of this article for a chance to win one of four Goatskin Leather copies of the new Christian Standard Bible —— I’m not talking about having a mission statement.
Ambition, Faith, and Timing - Daniel Im
Last week I covered the paradox of ambition and faith. Today, I want to add a third variable to the mix: timing. Although spiritual leaders can have ambition and God-placed faith, there’s still one major area they can mess up in—timing. Abraham had a significant calling on his life, and it was to be the father of a great nation, one that was intended to be a blessing to the entire world and one from which the Savior of the world would come.
Church-Based Leadership Development
You are here: Home / Leadership / Church-Based Leadership Development A few years back, when I was in Myanmar visiting a local Bible College, I remember being in the back of a small oddly shaped “truck” bouncing around the dirt road. It didn’t feel like we were ever moving faster than 30 miles an hour. To be honest, the “truck” probably didn’t even have the capacity to do so.
Evangelical Views of the 2016 Election: Ethics and Theology Professor on Why Trump is the Best Candidate for President
As this is such an important conversation, I’ve decided to expand it a bit, with more voices. In addition, I will ask authors to answer the objections to their position in a separate article (i.e. how can you even think about supporting ______ when they think/say/do _______). This is a complex election and it requires discerning thinking. I’m hoping we can do that together.

Planting Missional Churches
Planting a church is one of the most exciting adventures you’ll ever embark on. It’s also one of the hardest. It requires initiative, leadership, strategy, systems, and a lot of prayer.
Book Review: Saturate by Jeff Vanderstelt
*My post here was originally published on June 15, 2015 in Christianity Today. When I first stepped into my role as a small-group pastor, I was at a loss as to how to help my church get on mission. I knew what it meant to be missional and intentional with my relationships. I knew how to share my faith. I even knew how to motivate my leaders to get on mission with God.
