Assessing the Effects of Anaerobic Co-Digestion with FOG and Food Waste Residuals on Biogas Production
1. Introduction Nearly one-third of global food production is wasted at an annual cost of $990 billion [1]. In developed nations, up to 40% of this food waste is discarded at the post-consumer level [2]. Americans waste $408 billion of food, which costs an average family of four $1800 per year [3]. According to USEPA (2018) [4], the United States produces about 292.4 million tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) annually.
Development of Localized Assessment of Municipal Wastewater Disposal Risks
1. Introduction Regulatory, political, and economic constraints have shaped wastewater management strategies throughout the United States. Historically the easiest means to dispose of wastewater is via the nearest river or stream. Such disposal goes back to Roman times. However, as the communities grew, the environmental degradation caused by this practice became clearer, and regulations to eliminate raw wastewater disposal were legislated.

Odor Management at Landfills: Part 2 - A Novel Biosensor for Measuring Odors at Landfills
Getty Images By Daniel Meeroff, Ph.D. and Sharmily Rahman | Nov 11, 2021 The absence of an objective measurement technique for nuisance odor strength creates difficulties for regulatory agencies to draft effective rules for solid waste managers to deal with odor complaints. To address this problem, researchers at Florida Atlantic University’s Laboratories for Engineered Environmental Solutions (Lab.EES) are working on a unique idea developed by Dr. Daniel E. Meeroff.
Odor Management at Landfills: Part 1 - The Current State of the Art
Generation of odors from solid waste management operations is a common occurrence due to the nature of the waste material and the anaerobic decomposition of its readily biodegradable components. Ritzkowski et al. (2006) estimated that emissions of airborne pollutants can last up to 30-100 years after the solid waste facility is technically closed.
Effectiveness of Wastewater-Based Epidemiology as an Early Warning Tool to Detect SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19)
1. Introduction Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) is an enveloped single-stranded RNA virus belonging to the Betacoronavirus genus [1] [2]. Infections of SARS-CoV-2 result in the disease known as COVID-19, which was first identified in late 2019 and was declared a global pandemic on March 11, 2020, by the World Health Organization (WHO) [3].
Improving resilience against the effects of climate change
The scientific literature provides strong evidence that global climate change is affecting the world's water resources (19; 17; 11), including ocean acidification, global temperature rise (Figure 1), receding ice caps, melting glaciers, changing precipitation patterns, and sea level rise (10; 19; 20; 11).
