Protected species in your backyard? Here's what to do in Canada
You've probably spent a lot of time, effort, and cash on making your home an inviting oasis, but have you made a mistake by creating a haven for a whole host of critters and creatures? While some common household pests can be deterred and removed with ease, others are protected by law, making it illegal to disturb or harm them. From skunks to bats, these animals come with some protection that it would be wise to understand.
Protected species in America: what you can and can't remove from your home
Many US states regulate bat exclusions due to the important role they play in the ecosystem. Some plants depend partly or wholly on bats to pollinate them. For example, you cannot move bats during the maternity season, which is from mid-April to late August in North America, depending on the climate. You must wait until fall or winter when all bat pups can fly and the colony has moved on.

Frances Carruthers 20 October 2026 While sometimes crowds are unavoidable in tourist hotspots, they can detract from a location’s ambiance, inconvenience its local population, and even harm its ecosystem. This has led some destinations to put caps on visitor numbers in a bid to keep tourism sustainable. Here are the top destinations around the world that are limiting overtourism – and how they’re achieving it.
The origins of 7 wildlife idioms
“She has a bee in her bonnet”; “We had a whale of a time!”; “Cat got your tongue?” You’ve all heard these animal idioms, and you—for the most part—probably understand what they mean in modern language. But do you know where they came from? (That last phrase, according to one theory, came about because in the Middle Ages, liars and blasphemers were punished by having their tongues cut out and fed to the king’s cats.
Increased toxicity of pesticides spells trouble for pollinators and aquatic insects
Over the last 25 years, the toxicity of 381 pesticides in the U.S. more than doubled for pollinators and aquatic invertebrates such as crustaceans, mayflies and dragonflies, according to a new study. For vertebrate groups such as birds, fish and mammals, toxicity dropped. But as pesticides harmful to vertebrates were phased out, this made way for greater use of the insecticide classes neonicotinoids and pyrethroids.
Nepal says Everest climbing continues despite reports of Covid-19
A Nepali government official said on Monday that many foreign climbers were continuing their attempts to summit Mount Everest despite reports of a Covid-19 outbreak at the base camp of the world's tallest peak. In April, a Norwegian climber was evacuated from the base camp of the 8,848m mountain and flown to Kathmandu, where he tested positive for Covid-19. He has since returned home.
Mount Everest is growing!
It's HOW tall? That's what officials from Nepal and China had to discover the hard way. (Photo 65261839 © Daniel Prudek - Dreamstime.com) An official measuring of Earth's tallest mountain has revealed something that sounds surprising. Mount Everest is taller than ever—a stunning 8,848.86 metres (29,031 feet) high! But it's not exactly what it sounds like. Everest isn't necessarily growing (more on that later).
