Introduction Patched-related (Ptr) is a transmembrane sterol-sensing domain (SSD) protein that is expressed in different insect and vertebrate species (Zúñiga et al., 2009). Ptr topology and domain organization are similar to those of the Drosophila segment polarity protein Patched (Ptc, Nüsslein-Volhard and Wieschaus, 1980).
