Moderate- and high-intensity cycling bouts result in a decrease in serum calcium and increases in parathyroid hormone (PTH) and bone resorption 17 , 18 . These metabolic factors may influence bone metabolism in cyclists. To our knowledge, there has been only one prospective study of changes in aBMD in female cyclists 15 , who may be particularly at risk for developing osteoporosis based on previous reports of reduced aBMD in young female athletes in weight-sensitive sports 19 .
