1 Introduction Rotationplasty is a rare reconstructive procedure of the lower limb. This specialised surgery was developed initially by Borggreve [1] for the treatment of tuberculous knee ankylosis and consequent limb-length inequality, and later refined by Van Nes [2] for correction of congenital proximal femoral focal deficiency (PFFD). Its innovative use in the treatment of malignant lower extremity bone tumours was first described by Kristen, Knahr & Salzer [3].

Key messages Children with severe neurological impairment have increased complications and are less likely to complete intravenous treatment when peripherally inserted venous catheters are placed in the lower limb, compared to the upper limb. Extravasation injury secondary to peripherally inserted venous catheters can cause significant harm and may require ongoing follow up.
