Reducing Farm Food Safety Risks
By Danielle Sprague Fall is here so is harvest season! For our fresh produce that is harvested and packed by hand, food safety practices play a major role in protecting consumers. Some growers may be subject to the United States Food and Drug Administration’s Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Produce Safety Rule, while other growers may receive food safety requirements from buyers.
Keep an Eye Out for Citrus Greening this Winter
By Danielle Sprague Scouting for citrus greening disease or huanglongbing (HLB) should be an essential practice of citrus growers in our area. The symptoms of this disease can be found year round, but they are most visible now through March. Citrus greening affects all varieties of citrus and is widespread throughout the industry in South Florida. Disease incidence in the Panhandle is low, therefore, scouting and infected tree removal is still a valuable production practice.

Thrips showing resistance to neonic seed treatments
Tobacco thrips, Frankliniella fusca, are seedling pests of peanut, soybean, and cotton throughout the southern USA. The adults and larvae feed on the developing leaves, causing injury during the very early vegetative stages of these crops. Severe injury to soybean results in little, if any, economic damage. Peanut also is highly tolerant of injury, although delayed maturity can occur when thrips injury is combined with other early season stresses, such as herbicide injury or drought stress.
