What was your first job as a journalist?

Cops, courts, fire and rock and roll at a dead evening newspaper in Norfolk.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Started in ninth grade, where I was graded. Went on to a Royal in college, then an IBM Selectric.. Bought a Safari, thinking: foreign gig.

How is social media changing news?

A platform for my thoughts. And everyone else's

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Anderson Cooper

What does it mean to be a journalist?

To sleep well at night -- except for those 3 a.m jackknives in bed as I realize I didn't triple-check something.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

A skill saw, a plane, and a brush. Never be afraid to get some paint on your brush.

What's your favorite social network?

It's called Earth Bread and Brewery, in Mt Airy, USA

Who do you wish followed you?

My children.

Why did you become a journalist?

I was picking up trash for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts when All The Presidents Men was published. It beat stabbing whitefish.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

The one I'm working on next.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Write every day, knock on doors, smell the glove.
