By quantifying the long-term sequelae due to growth faltering, our study shows that the global burden of diarrhoea is substantially underestimated when only incidence and mortality are considered. We found that accounting for long-term sequelae increased the number of diarrhoea DALYs among children younger than 5 years by about 40%.
