Andy Burnham said Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps were “almost certainly” behind threats to RAF Fairford, the firmest attribution of responsibility made so far by the UK after an incident late last month. The prime minister told MPs the UK would bring further sanctions against Tehran and the IRGC as a result, with more information to follow in an update from the home secretary, Shabana Mahmood.
SAS personnel refusing to answer questions about alleged extrajudicial killings in Afghanistan
Most SAS personnel approached by an inquiry into alleged extrajudicial killings in Afghanistan have refused to answer any questions, the judge leading the proceedings has said. Lord Justice Haddon-Cave is investigating allegations of more than 50 summary killings by UK special forces soldiers as well as claims of an alleged cover-up of illegal activity and inadequate investigations by the Royal Military Police.

George Galloway contests London byelection without setting foot in UK
George Galloway has been elected seven times to parliament, but his attempt to succeed for an eighth this week, in the London seat formerly held by Keir Starmer, is undoubtedly his most curious effort yet. Since the byelection campaign began, the leader of the Workers party of Britain has yet to set foot in the UK, let alone the Holborn and St Pancras constituency, because he is in what he describes as “self-exile” after being questioned by counter-terrorism police at Gatwick airport a year ago.

The shadow defence secretary, James Cartlidge, will say Britain needs to be ready to defend itself from potential aerial attacks and that new investment was needed in advanced radar and interceptor missiles.
No 10 insists RAF Fairford is safe after US withdraws its bombers from base
Downing Street has insisted RAF Fairford is secure a day after the US air force suddenly withdrew a dozen B-1 bombers that had been stationed at the Gloucestershire base over security concerns about a possible threat from Iran. The prime minister's spokesperson, speaking during a scheduled briefing, said "yes" when asked if the military site was safe – contrasting with the concern the US military revealed during the hasty redeployment the day before.

Kyiv Independent editor: ‘Our readers want Russia to suffer but we can't be propagandists'
Dan Sabbagh in Kyiv Readers of Ukraine's leading English news site “really want Russia to suffer” but that should not lead the title to downplay the military and political problems facing Kyiv, its editor has said. Speaking to the Guardian before an event to London, Olga Rudenko said many of the Kyiv Independent's most-read stories described Ukrainian deep strike attacks into Russia, potentially distorting its coverage.

Nato head: Britain must show ‘credible path’ of annual defence budget increases
Britain needs to show “a credible path” of annual increases in its defence budgets to meet a Nato target of spending nearly £30bn more on the military by the middle of the next decade, the head of the alliance said on Thursday. Mark Rutte, Nato’s secretary general, said that Britain could not wait until just before 2035 to lift defence spending to 3.5% of GDP, in an unusually pointed intervention a day after he met prime minister Andy Burnham.

Dan Sabbagh Nato needs “more UK and more Europe in the alliance” to deal with the most dangerous security environment faced by the west in a generation, the secretary general of the 32-country military alliance said this afternoon on a visit to the UK. Mark Rutte praised Britain for promising to increase defence spending in line with US demands after a meeting with prime minister Andy Burnham – but argued that the military and financial effort must continue into the future.

‘Nobody will win’: Zelenskyy adviser warns of mutual destruction if war with Russia continues
Russia and Ukraine are locked in an escalating war of long-range strikes with a growing risk to civilians in which neither side can entirely prevail, according to Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s defence technology adviser. Serhii Beskrestnov, widely known by his call sign, Flash, said he was worried about the prospects for Kyiv this winter, and suggested elderly people should be evacuated in case Russian bombing were to knock out the capital’s energy supply.
Russian airspace becoming unsafe for commercial airlines, Zelenskyy says
Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said Russia's airspace is becoming unsafe for commercial airlines, as Vladimir Putin promised to step up strikes against Ukraine's energy facilities in the run-up to winter. The Ukrainian president said there was no intention to directly threaten civilian flights, but the growing number of attack drones being flown into the country by Ukraine would have to be “taken into account” by the aviation industry.
Russia targets Ukraine's rail network as war enters deadly new phase
Russia has opened a deadly new phase in its war against Ukraine by deliberately targeting the country's railway network, with six employees killed on Tuesday in the latest strikes on Kyiv. Ukraine's state-owned railway company, Ukrzaliznytsia, said its workers died when a ballistic missile plunged into a locomotive depot. The Russians hit other railway facilities, it added, during a massive bombardment of Kyiv and the Kyiv region.

Kyiv is enduring hours of daytime air raids and air raid warnings as Russia has fired 800 jet-powered drones into Ukraine in four days, using the faster weapons to sustain prolonged waves of attacks The new-model Shahed drones have a cruising speed of 200mph to 250mph , about double the 115mph achieved by the piston-engine version and beyond the speed of Ukraine's cheap interceptors, making them harder to stop.

Volodymyr, 61, a security guard, leads visitors from his family's badly damaged home, its roof blown off, back windows shattered, through the garden towards the impact site 300 metres away. The garden, like so many in Ukraine's villages and suburbs, is a sizeable allotment.
Love under anti-drone nets: Ukrainian couple wed in Kramatorsk combat zone
In the bright early afternoon sun of Kramatorsk's central and now ironically named Peace Square, Tetiana, in her bridal dress, and Oleksandr, in his military uniform, are holding up their phones at the ready. It is a public holiday, 35 years since Ukraine's declaration of independence, and a popular day for a wedding, though the open-air location is not obviously ideal.
