1 INTRODUCTION The plant economic spectrum (Reich, 2014), which builds upon the well-known leaf economic spectrum (Wright et al., 2004), predicts that species can be arranged along a fast–slow continuum of strategies. This continuum reflects how plants allocate carbon, nutrients, and water to build and maintain their organs.

Question Understanding how nutrient availability and soil conditions influence ecosystem functionality is crucial for predicting changes in the plant community and informing ecological restoration programs.
